Comment Cry me a river... (Score 1) 277

My girlfriend and her folks cannot get any DSL where they live. Good old 56k, baby!.

Now imagine my frustration and complete impatience whenever I have to fix their computers out there in the sticks. (I'm not just their future son-in-law, I am their round the clock, personal Geek Squad). I would kill for low speed DSL there. Imagine how I have to hear it when they whine about the 'nets running slow because Winblows has to get Balmer's weekly update gifts. (They have to have it on because of what her mom does). Before you say "Satellite": That would be a viable option if it wasn't for the blasted data caps, costs, and weather causing issues.

Cry me a fucking river with your First World problems. Some people have it way worse than you!

Comment Re:He could get out of the charge (Score 5, Informative) 252

No.

One of the charges he is being slapped with is extortion. Because, according to the article, he was charging women $350 to remove the images. That is the very definition of extortion as the women had to pay to remove the images.

It is a wonder he isn't being slapped with federal charges of extortion.

The other charge is identity theft. According to the CA laws: He was posting information about these women without their explicit consent. That breaks the ID Theft law there.

That is not to say he will not be forced to turn over the information of all the idiots who posted the nudes. They may still get that info with or without his help. However, he certainly won't get a plea deal out of it if he cooperates because he is being charged with more serious, unrelated issues that the CA Anti-Revenge Porn law doesn't cover.

How do astronomers calculate the age of a distant planet? I can see how they'd get distance from host star (orbital period) and mass (displacement of host star) but how on earth do you work out the age?

They can't accurately predict it to a degree of 100% certainty. However they can guess based on it's radiation level and it's decay of said rad signal. They can also compare it to surrounding star systems and see if they have been influenced for an extended period of time or more recent (recent as in millions of years ago instead of billions of years).

It's not an exact science but at least it gives them a ballpark figure until they can manage to actually get to that planet and get samples. However, that may not happen in anybody's lifetime.

What is China going to do when Microsoft tells them, as politely as possible, to go fuck themselves?

Last time I checked, Microsoft was a US company and wasn't under any obligation to listen to the Chinese Government. I suppose China could say "Well, in that case, we won't sell Microsoft Windows [Insert number here]". However, considering China leads the way in copyright infringement and human rights violations, how much of a threat is that really? They could stop the sale of legit copies but that won't stop the pirated copies to be sold. To which Microsoft will create new ways to stop it. To then which means those who legitimately bought copies have to endure draconian anti-piracy things like always on DRM, etc

In the end, no matter what Microsoft does, it won't change the inevitable outcome. China gets what they want (Microsoft bending over and taking it be it from piracy or doing as asked [dare I say: Demands?]). Microsoft comes up with an excuse for imposing their will on those who play by the rules (whether by DRM or by delaying the inevitable death of XP). Meanwhile, those who play by the rules get hosed and must endure it, less they change their perspective and get Linux or Apple.

I RTA and come to find out the school played a part in this as well. Apparently the school told the cops he didn't have permission to plug in his car and agreed to press charges when asked by the cop.

Long story short: Both the school and the cops are going to be spending money on PR damage control that far exceeds any costs the EV owner could have milked out of their power grid.

If this happened to me, I'd pull my kid out of the school and either move or put him in another school.
