Submission + - Sony Files Patent for Kinect-like Device for PlayStation (gizmag.com)

An anonymous reader writes: A recently published patent application indicates that Sony may be working on a Kinect-like 3D depth-sensing device for PlayStation. If Sony follows through with development of such a device, it will no doubt be looking to make up some ground lost to Microsoft, whose release of the Kinect in November 2010, overshadowed the release of Sony's PlayStation Move just a month earlier.

Stoobalou writes: Hot on the heels of the discovery of the the PlayStation 3 private root key, and its subsequent leakage by iPhone hacker Geohot, the first custom firmware for the formerly inpenetrable console has been released.

Comment Other OS wasn't available on Launch PS3s (Score 1) 546

I may be mis-remembering, but at PS3 Launch OtherOS support was not in the Firmware yet (1.3 or 1.5 something), OtherOS came to the firmware later...1.6 something? So they could say they added a feature then took it away until the date they started shipping the systems supporting OtherOS out of the box. Or maybe it was support for OtherOS Linux other than Yellowdog that was added later. I forget. I use Other OS, haven't updated yet and the DNS hack seems to not work anymore to get on PSN.

Submission + - Sony Sued Over Linux Removal On PS3 (examiner.com)

In a http://ia331218.us.archive.org/2/items/gov.uscourts.cand.226894/gov.uscourts.cand.226894.1.0.pdf seventeen page long case file, everything is carefully documented about the feature being touted as a key component of the PS3 and why it was unlawful to remove the feature from current PS3 units. In the case filing, the plaintiffs claims the removal of the 'OS' feature causes them to lose money and that Sony changed the system settings and more.

Submission + - Sony Sued Over Other OS Removal (thinq.co.uk) 1

Stoobalou writes: A Californian Playstation 3 user has filed the first class action lawsuit against Sony over removal of the 'Install Other OS' function from the Playstation 3.

The action seeks to redress Sony's "intentional disablement of the valuable functionalities originally advertised as available with the Sony Playstation 3 video game console."

The suit claims that the disablement breaches the sales contract between Sony and its customers and constitutes "an unfair and deceptive business practice perpetrated on millions of unsuspecting customers".
