60TB Disk Drives Could Be a Reality In 2016 293

CWmike writes "The maximum areal densities of hard disk drives are expected to more than double by 2016, according to IHS iSuppli. Hard drive company Seagate has also predicted a doubling of drive density, and now IHS iSuppli is confirming what the vendor community already knew. Leading the way for greater disk density will be technologies such as heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), which Seagate patented in 2006. Seagate has already said it will be able to produce a 60TB 3.5-in. hard drive by 2016. Laptop drives could reach 10TB to 20TB in the same time frame, IHS iSuppli stated. It said areal densities are projected to climb to a maximum 1,800 Gbits per square inch per platter by 2016, up from 744 Gbits per square inch in 2011. Areal density equals bit density, or bits of information per inch of a track, multiplied by tracks per inch on a drive platter. This year, hard drive areal densities are estimated to reach 780Gbits per square inch per platter, and then rise to 900Gbits per square inch next year."

How recently? Have you seen how much the just release 7.0 cuts memory usage 10-30% overall and in some cases up-to 50%? Right now I have palemoon 6.0 and FF7 open at the same time my memory usage is as follows Palemoon with one tab - 160 MB - 1 tab running idle for 20 mins (classic Google homepage) Firefox 7 with 6 tabs open to multiple sites running for about 30 mins - 190 MB and closing tabs will now free MORE memory.

Sony Officially Blames Anonymous For PSN Hack 575

H_Fisher writes "In a letter to Congress, Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony's board of directors, blames hacker group Anonymous for making possible the theft of gamers' personal information. 'What is becoming more and more evident is that Sony has been the victim of a very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack designed to steal personal and credit card information for illegal purposes,' Hirai wrote. He also indicated that Sony waited two days before notifying the FBI of the theft."

Sony Online Entertainment Services Follow PSN Down 184

nam37 writes "Sony Online Entertainment's various services seem to be down and a message on the official site does not give much information on the particulars. According to a short post on the site, the services were taken down after an investigation revealed a deeper 'intrusion' than expected at first. This is the first we have heard that Sony's MMORPG arm had some sort of security breach. This could be part of Sony's plans to beef up security for the PlayStation Network, but this message seems to indicate that something more serious going on."

A retail grocer, for example, must have a stock of groceries and other merchandise to sell to customers. The grocer must also have wrapping supplies and store equipment to serve customers properly and efficiently. Besides these, a supply of cash must be on hand for making change and paying expenses. This property is called the assets of the business. A business owner often obtains some of these assets by purchasing them on credit and promising to pay for them at some future date. The persons to whom these debts are owed are called the creditors of the business. They have claims against the assets until the debts are paid. The creditors’ claims are called liabilities of the business. If the assets are owned free of debt, the proprietor may claim their entire value. If there are liabilities, the proprietor can claim only the value that remains after deducting the liabilities from the as- sets. This claim against the assets is called a proprietorship or capital.

Police Swarm Bungie Office Over Halo Replica Rifle 746

sv_libertarian writes 'A panicked person in Kirkland, WA called local police on Wednesday, claiming they saw someone walking down the street with an AK-47. It was actually a Bungie employee carrying an overgrown model of a Halo sniper rifle, which resembles an AK-47 as much as a Volkswagen resembles a Formula 1 racer.' Halo 3: ODST is set to launch on September 22nd, and fans got some new details and early looks at the game during PAX.

Kernel 2.6.31 To Speed Up Linux Desktop 360

Dan Jones writes "As the Linux community looks forward to another kernel release, the kernel hackers have been working on improving the memory management so that the X desktop responsiveness is doubled under high memory pressure. The result is an improved desktop experience. Benchmarks on memory-tight desktops show clock time and major faults reduced by 50 per cent, and pswpin numbers (memory reads from disk) are reduced to about one-third. Another improvement coming with 2.6.31 is kernel mode-setting support for ATI Radeon graphics cards, enabling faster user switching and a more seamless startup experience. Peripheral developments that will also improve the Linux desktop experience include support for the new USB 3.0 specification and a new Firewire stack. Even minor Linux releases have heaps of new features these days!"
