Comment Re:Knows as much about ethics as he does mathemati (Score 1) 241

You're incorrect. "Earning money" can be grossly unethical. Do you not understand that we live on a planet with finite resources, and that it is those resources that underwrite money? If someone is getting wealthy, he's doing it at the expense of a certain number of others: he's hoarding resources and depriving others of the use of those resources. In getting wealthy, that person is disadvantaging others. The wealthier the person is, the more people he had to disadvantage to achieve it. Warren Buffet understands and acknowledges this dynamic... why don't you?

You're incorrect. Certainly we live on a planet with finite resources, but you seem to be under the mistaken impression that economics is zero-sum. Since I'm not an expert in the field, the below is an excerpt from the linked wikipedia article.

Many economic situations are not zero-sum, since valuable goods and services can be created, destroyed, or badly allocated, and any of these will create a net gain or loss. Assuming the counterparties are acting rationally, any commercial exchange is a non-zero-sum activity, because each party must consider the goods it is receiving as being at least fractionally more valuable than the goods it is delivering. Economic exchanges must benefit both parties enough above the zero-sum such that each party can overcome its transaction costs.

Your other points about unethical behavior in business are valid and in my opinion probably occur all to often, but are certainly not universal. You seem to have a have a problem with capitalism but living in a capitalist society I can attest to an overall high standard of living for most residents. Not that I dislike the concept of socialism, I'm just saying capitalism isn't innately evil (and as I'm sure you would agree not a grand utopia).

I think people who choose to play this kind of game would do so because of the limitation. Clearly the market for such a product would be smaller, but I don't think that it would be nonexistent. I personally believe that the avatar part of the patent is nothing more than a novelty, but being able to earn health or fitness credits is a pretty good idea.

Sometimes the only difference between having people laugh with you and at you is whether or not you decide to join in. Anyway, yeah - fat people. For some reason society has decided its okay to mock them. Even better, a normal healthy weight is "fat" and only absurdly low fat percentages are "normal", meaning that's even more people that you're allowed to tell them what they should be doing with their diets / bodies.

According to random numbers found here, acceptable body fat percentages for men are between 18%-26% and between 25%-31% for women. These numbers aren't even vaguely "absurdly low". Now, if you are talking about the media's version of what is "healthy" I agree. I really dislike that women (and to a lesser extent men) are pressured into being overly thin and often develop eating disorders.
I don't see a problem with this type of game though. As you said there are many overweight people and I think this could serve to motivate some of them. Anyone that might be discouraged by it doesn't need to play. As someone else mentioned the wii fit already does this.

I think the likelihood of getting a stipend depends on a number of factors including: school, caliber of student, available funds, and department. I went to grad school for Math and think the vast majority had assistantships or fellowships. On the other hand, I don't think I've heard of a lot of people getting stipends when they work on an MBA.

I would hope that students actually paying for their advanced degrees wouldn't be expected to do so much tedious work.

At least that was a pain for me (as I am an uber n006). After a lot of googleing the solution was relatively pain free in ubuntu. I agree with your points though, the best distribution is the one that works for you and Ubuntu seems to do a pretty good job all around (for a general user). I've been meaning to try out Lubuntu and just haven't gotten around to it. Anyone have positive experience with it on an older, low-mem system?

Certainly humans can stay awake that long and even longer, but I would question the quality of work if one were to do so. Rereading your comment, it looks like you did this for a couple of weeks. I imagine it was horribly exhausting. If you actually have the will power and focus to do that, wow. Good for you, but for your sake I hope you don't have to do it often.
