Submission + - Stunning Satellite Images of Artic Ice Show Largest/Thickest Ice Pack in Years

marcgvky writes: For years, many people in the scientific community and our favorite apocalyptic horseman: Al Gore, have been claiming that the Arctic is in an ‘irrevocable death spiral’. with imminent ice-free summers bound to trigger further disasters. According to this article in the Daily Mail, the summer ice pack is thicker and larger than it has ever been; spanning an area of ocean twice the size of the state of Alaska...

Along with locusts and plague, Gore, et. al., told us to expect gigantic releases of methane into the atmosphere from frozen Arctic deposits, and accelerated global warming caused by the fact that heat from the sun will no longer be reflected back by the ice into space.

And then there is the Polar Bear... predications of declines in population were wrong. The bear population continues to increase, forcing the main international bear science body, the Polar Bear Specialist Group, to admit that it has no reliable data from almost half of the Arctic, so cannot say whether numbers are falling or rising.

Submission + - Feds Want Nuclear Waste Train, but Nowhere to Go (go.com) 1

mdsolar writes: The U.S. government is looking for trains to haul radioactive waste from nuclear power plants to disposal sites. Too bad those trains have nowhere to go.

Putting the cart before the horse, the U.S. Department of Energy recently asked companies for ideas on how the government should get the rail cars needed to haul 150-ton casks filled with used, radioactive nuclear fuel.

They won't be moving anytime soon. The latest government plans call for having an interim test storage site in 2021 and a long-term geologic depository in 2048.

No one knows where those sites will be, but the Obama administration is already thinking about contracts to develop, test and certify the necessary rail equipment.

Submission + - Myth of arctic meltdown: Stunning images show summer ice cap thicker

Of course, when people are (naturally and wisely) skeptical of these prediction (that are simply meant to incite people to donate their cash or give up their rights), politicians such as Al Gore, John Kerry, Barrack "Millhouse" Obama, continue to insist that climate science is ‘settled’ and have accused those who question their forecasts of being climate change ‘deniers’. It would appear that the real "deniers" are the people that keep promoting the impending apocalypse..... that never happens.

Submission + - The Passenger Pigeon: A Century of Extinction 1

An anonymous reader writes: On September 1, 1914, Martha, the last passenger pigeon was found dead in her aviary at the Cincinnati Zoo. When the first European settlers arrived in North America at least one of every four birds on the continent was a passenger pigeon, making them the most numerous birds in North America, and perhaps in the world. From the article: "But extinction apparently doesn’t ring with the finality it used to. Researchers are working to 'de-extinct' the bird. They got their hands on some of the 1,500 or so known passenger pigeon specimens and are hoping to resurrect the species through some Jurassic Park-like genetic engineering. Instead of using frog DNA to fill out the missing parts of a dinosaur’s genetic code as in Michael Crichton’s story, the real-life 'bring-back-the-passenger pigeon' researchers are using the bird’s closest relative, the band-tailed pigeon.

Submission + - SPAM: Microsoft Shutting Down MSN Messenger After 15 Years Of Service

airfuz writes: Microsoft took a bold move announcing that users have to move away from the old version of internet explorer to the new version 11. And now not long after that, Microsoft announced that they are shutting down the 15 year old MSN Messenger. Most people have moved away from the service to Facebook and other mobile based messenger such as Whatsapp and so MSN is left with few users. But still, ending a 15 year messaging service like the MSN Messenger means something to the one's who grew up using it.

Submission + - Australian Bureau of Meteorology accused of Criminally Adjusted Global Warming (breitbart.com)

marcgvky writes: The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has been caught red-handed manipulating temperature data to show "global warming" where none actually exists.

At Amberley, Queensland, for example, the data at a weather station showing 1 degree Celsius cooling per century was "homogenized" (adjusted) by the Bureau so that it instead showed a 2.5 degrees warming per century.

You're a complete retard and have not studied the History of Nazi Germany. The citizens where systematically disarmed, so that they could pose no credible threat to the Reich. The ONLY time that citizens were armed was during the pinch on Berlin, at which time anyone who could carry a Panzerfaust or rifle was pressed into service (at gunpoint) to serve until death or victory. Ticket revenue probably goes to maintaining those monstrous stadiums and huge salaries. If you take away their ability to control WHO sees the content and WHEN they see it, they couldn't rape fans for $100-$2000 per ticket. If there is only one local source to view the LIVE content (read: go to the game), the NBA can continue to charge OBSCENE fees for the tickets and morons will continue to pay those fees for the privileged of viewing the LIVE content.

Personally, I am a free market person. If fans weren't so rabidly willing to pay the OBSCENE ticket prices, the market would correct downward. However, it would seem that the market is willing to support these OBSCENE ticket prices, so game on!!

And, because they are first-parties (aka "partners") you aren't told about these data-sharing agreements, and you aren't given the ability to opt-out. The problem with this is that the other insurers (life, health, auto, etc.) and pharma companies subscribe to these data clearinghouses as "partners," allowing them all to circumvent HIPPA in-spirit, but remain within the letter. You may be no risk at all, taking an anti-depressant, however, the life insurer will rate you as a suicide / high risker.... see where I am going with this?

The spirit of HIPPA was to keep the fact that you are a pot smoking, HIV infected (but otherwise productive and high-functioning) person out of the hands of anyone THAT YOU DONT WANT TO HAVE IT.

Guess what, I work in healthcare and have 10 more storied like this.... if you think your health insurance and healthcare providers are vangaurds of privacy.... ROTFLMAO... you have no idea.
