i would have to agree, the new redesign smells of the corporate push to increase ad revenue - hence all the white space created to be later filled with ads. I think this debate should not be about which version is better and why, but be turned into a protest against selling slashdot out, as futile as that might be..

The new BETA design is GREAT in the eyes of the business people behind revenue generation at slashdot, All the white space they created is just a place holder for all the advertising spam thats going to fill it gradually. I highly doubt the designers of BETA were thinking how can we make the users happy by making it more readable. Unfortunately for them and for us, increasing their revenues at the expense of user's happiness is a mistake that will only hurt them long term. Plenty of other good news sources to choose from.
