A price drop on the PS3 this year is starting to seem more and more likely. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter tells GameDaily BIZ that PS3 could cost 100 dollars less by mid-year.
The Blu-ray drive in the PlayStation 3 has been a source of much contention among industry observers. The inclusion of Blu-ray in the PS3 is one of the main reasons the console is being sold for $600. But as with any product, economies of scale should help to eventually bring costs down.

techtakeaway writes: "Nintendo have always been keen to promote their child-friendly image, with their cutesy characters and games that arent throroughly based on violence, like many PlayStation titles. But this family image seems to have taken a sudden turn with the release of the Wii, Nintendo are keen to compete with Sony & Microsoft — and by doing so, they have succumbed to having a bit more violence in their games.
The original Manhunt game, released in 2003 on the PlayStation 2, was an incredibly dark, violent affair, you become a man who is being hunted for sport — and to survive you must murder people in horrible ways. The upcoming sequal, Manhunt 2, is making its next-generation debut on the Nintendo Wii, but is it right that people will be physically acting out their in-game murders with their Wii-mote actions?

Sony Rejects PS3 Price Cuts 187
Despite hopeful comments by analysts, Sony has gone on the record (again) saying that it has no plans to cut the PS3's pricetag any time soon. Next Generation reports: "'PS3 prices and shipment plans for the future should be determined by market trends and competition. Sony currently doesn't have any specific plan to cut the PlayStation 3's price.' Analysts believe a price cut is inevitable, as the company struggles to catch Microsoft's early lead with Xbox 360, and the $250 Wii continues to sell as many as can be produced. However, Sony's plan has generally been to hold tight and hope that demand for Blu-ray drives will increase, by the end of this year." Relatedly, the company has outlined releases for the second quarter of this year on the PS2, PS3, and PSP systems.

The Board, which classifies up to 300 games a year, concluded that for gamers "The violence helps make the play exhilaratingly out of reach of ordinary life."
But it added "Gamers seem not to lose awareness that they are playing a game and do not mistake the game for real life."

fistfullast33l writes: "Overnight Sony has released firmware updates for the PSP (version 3.40) and PS3 (version 1.70). PS3 Fanboy has most of the details of the update, which includes support for PS2 devices, including rumble in some cases. IGN has a more detailed report on the ability to download, play, and save PSX games on your PS3 and transfer them to your PSP. Apparently the Sony store won't have these updates until 4/26. The PSP update includes support for this feature and that's about it. No word on whether currently downloaded titles will work next week, however Sony apparently has stated that not all PSX titles will support this feature. IGN also has pointed out that the update currently is only available in Japan, and no word of it is mentioned on the North American PS3 Update Site."
