While I tend to agree that increasing electricity production will have little effect on the liquid fuel (oil) crisis, there are 2 legitimate arguments to support the opposite.
1. If you replaced the natural gas power plants with nuclear, or solar, or wind, etc, natural gas could potentially be used to directly power cars. See the Honda Civic GX. 20% of the world's electricity comes from natural gas.
2. If pure electric cars (like the Mitubishi iMiEV & Subaru R1e) were to come to market, generating more electricity would reduce demand for gasoline.
