There is no better satisfaction in deploying a new application version in less than a few minutes at a corporate global enterprise system. The days of loading thousands of client applications are coming to an end.

Reducing the number of time a company report their finances would only hurt the individual investor. Without insider information, how would I know if a company was in dire straights? Regular public updates on a company's performance helps to level the investment playing field.

There were wide swings in the stock market before computer based trading algorithms (ex. Crash of 1929). Reducing transactions probably would not make any changes to our current stock market volatility.

At our company it is impossible for a group manager to hire employees. All new hires have to be approved by high level executives. These executives usually have no clue what resources are needed to keep up with the work at the lower levels. They will typically either reject the request or hold out until the next fiscal quarter. The group manager is forced to work extra hours to fill in the gaps in the interim.

That is why I've been out of management for the past three years. It is insane be a group manager and have no authority to hire as needed.

What is the difference between Native Code Technology and ActiveX controls? I hope that Native Code Technology as you described never see the light of day. The main task of of a web browser it to properly render the standard HTML tags for the user. The latest version of the web browsers are actually doing a good job at displaying standard HTML. The last thing we need is to revert back to working with proprietary plug-in UI controls.

IE9 May Not Be Enough To Save IE 328

An anonymous reader writes "The October market share numbers are in and Net Applications' numbers show a surprising drop in IE8 market share — the first time since the browser was introduced. Strangely, IE9 has not gained much and IE7 as well as IE6 are losing as well. The only two browsers gaining are Chrome and Safari — and both browsers have hit new record market shares. The frenzy around IE8 may have subsided already, and Microsoft is under tremendous pressure to roll out IE9 soon. StatCounter's numbers indicate that Firefox is close to surpassing IE in Europe."

I truly don't understand the cost savings by not including a recovery DVD. Here is a rough estimate on costs associated with each option.

* Include DVD recovery disc - 10 cents per disc

* Customer calls in to have recovery DVD shipped - 5 dollars per disc (includes support call, shipping and handling)

The computer company is counting at least 1 in 50 people will not call their support line to recover their PC. Knowing the typical home user, this is an extremely high ratio. I suspect that the actual ratio would actually be 1 in 5 or lower. The combination of MS Windows and a home user would usually lead to an unstable OS within a year.

JavaScript/HTML 5 Gaming? 201

cjcela writes "Lately I've seen some HTML 5/JavaScript games popping up on the web. Most of them lack sound, and are not polished, but little by little this is changing. As an example, check Galactic Plunder. While it is only a single-level proof of concept, it is one of the first arcade non-Flash games that I've found playable. Do you know of other comparable or better pure JavaScript games?"

One Quarter of Germans Happy To Have Chip Implants 170

justice4all writes "If it means shorter lines at the supermarket, a quarter of Germans would be happy to have a chip implanted under their skin. The head of Germany's main IT trade body told the audience at the opening ceremony of the CeBIT technology exhibition that one in four of his countrymen are happy to have a microchip inserted for ID purposes."

A Second Lessig Fair-Use Video Is Suppressed By WMG 187

Bios_Hakr points out an ironic use of the DMCA: for the second time, a video tutorial on fair use that Larry Lessig uploaded to YouTube has been muzzled. This time the sound has been pulled from the video; last time the video was taken off of YouTube. (Video and sound for the new "webside chat" can be experienced together on BlipTV.) Both times, Warner Music Group was the party holding copyright on a song that Lessig used in an unarguably fair-use manner. TechDirt is careful not to assume that an actual DMCA takedown notice was issued, on the likelihood that Google's automatic copyright-violation detectors did the deed. "The unintended consequences of asking tool providers [e.g., Google] to judge what is and what is not copyright infringement lead to tremendous problems with companies shooting first and asking questions later. They are silencing speech, on the threat that it might infringe on copyright. This is backwards. We live in a country that is supposed to cherish free speech, not stifle it in case it harms the business model of a company. We live in a country that is supposed to encourage the free expression of ideas — not lock it up and take it down because one company doesn't know how to adapt its business model. We should never be silencing videos because they might infringe on copyright."

I could either way on this issue. It is nice to have a complete Linux installation with all the basic application already installed. On the other hand, we don't want a bloated Linux distro with tons of unwanted apps. With the Ubuntu netbook edition, it might makes sense to remove OpenOffice to make the Linux distro leaner. The Ubuntu software center makes quite easy for an user to install OpenOffice after the install. I don't agree with removing Gimp from the standard Ubuntu desktop edition. A decent graphic editing program is needed by many computer users.
