That pretty much goes for any Konami bemani game. Half are usually in-house as you say (anything by Naoki, for example), and the other half tend to be covers, although most if not all of the covers come from the Dancemania collection of albums (and there's a lot), and I'd say about 80% of THOSE in themselves are covers.

Submission + - Slackware 12.2 Released

CCFreak2K writes: Slackware 12.2 has been released after just over a half year. From the front page of slackware.com:

Yes folks, 'tis the season to announce a new release of Slackware. With a shiny new kernel, many package updates, and the newly added ability to install from a Samba share, we bring to you the latest in the stable Slackware 12.x series. Slackware 12.2 ships with the 2.6.27.7 Linux kernel, the Xorg 1.4.2 X server (with many driver, library, and application updates), Xfce 4.4.3, KDE 3.5.10, simplified wired and wireless networking with wicd in /extra, package upgrade management with slackpkg moved into the main tree, support for non-usb-storage digital cameras through libgphoto2, pm-utils (tools to support suspend and hibernate through HAL), and much, much more. This release brings the system up-to-date without compromising stability or compatibility with the 12.x series.

More details may be found in the official announcement.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this (or maybe someone has and it's just under my threshold), but not using a journalling filesystem can help tremendously. Having a whole system on a flash-based USB mass storage media formatted and mounted as ext3 is a great way to make sure the only bottleneck you'll ever have is disk I/O.

It's funny. Laugh.

"Back To My Mac" Catches a Thief 329

robipilot writes "Mac stolen, Mac comes online, owner connects using 'Back to My Mac,' owner takes picture of culprit, and voila, criminal caught. OK, it wasn't quite that simple, but here's an interesting story of using some built-in technology on the Mac to recover a stolen laptop."

Submission + - Cogent Co. depeers TeliaSonera 1

An anonymous reader writes: Apparently Cogent Co. has decided to depeer TeliaSonera. This wouldn't be anything unusual on the Internet were it not for the fact that not only did they depeer but also blackhole route any traffic coming from and going to TeliaSonera, making it impossible for singlehomed customers of both carriers to reach the respective networks. Rensys offers a detailed analysis: 'At this point, Telia lost direct access to 4474 prefixes (networks) transited via Cogent, whereas, Cogent lost 1633 Telia networks.'

This adds to Cogent Co.'s long history of depeerings and blackhole routing.

Submission + - A Virtual World from a Collection of Images

CCFreak2K writes: The CrazyLeaf Design blog has an article on a very cool piece of technology called PhotoSynth. In a nutshell, it gathers many images together of a related subject (for example, the Empire State building) and creates a virtual space that can be explored using only the images it gathered. Here is a link to the video on the original web site, and here is the link to the appropriate Microsoft Research page.

Digg.com Attempts To Suppress HD-DVD Revolt 1142

fieryprophet writes "An astonishing number of stories related to HD-DVD encryption keys have gone missing in action from digg.com, in many cases along with the account of the diggers who submitted them. Diggers are in open revolt against the moderators and are retaliating in clever and inventive ways. At one point, the entire front page comprised only stories that in one way or another were related to the hex number. Digg users quickly pointed to the HD DVD sponsorship of Diggnation, the Digg podcast show. Search digg for HD-DVD song lyrics, coffee mugs, shirts, and more for a small taste of the rebellion." Search Google for a broader picture; at this writing, about 283,000 pages contain the number with hyphens, and just under 10,000 without hyphens. There's a song. Several domain names including variations of the number have been reserved. Update: 05/02 05:44 GMT by J : New blog post from Kevin Rose of Digg to its users: "We hear you."

VOIP to be Made Illegal in India 258

Krish writes "Providers like Skype, Yahoo, Net2phone, Dialpad, etc. will not be able to offer VOIP in India under the proposed govt. clampdown. BPOs and other call centers will face the axe if they use any of the VOIP services provided by the above companies. It is not clear if this clampdown will affect regular home users."

10 Reasons To Buy a DSLR 657

Kurtis writes, "If you're planning on getting a digital camera for yourself this holiday season, here's 10 reasons why you should choose a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera instead of a point-'n'-shoot. DSLR cameras are obviously not perfect for everyone. This article also has a couple of small blurbs about who shouldn't buy a DSLR, and a few things that could be deemed negative aspects of DSLR cameras."

Judge Says RIAA Can't Have Hard Drive 233

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes "A Texas judge has refused to allow the RIAA untrammelled access to the defendant's hard drive in SONY v. Arellanes. The court ruled that only a mutually agreeable, neutral computer forensics expert may examine the hard drive, at the RIAA's expense, and that the parties must agree on mutually acceptable provisions for confidentiality."

"Dilbert" Creator Gets Voice Back 344

Scott Adams lost his voice 18 months ago to a disorder called Spasmodic Dysphonia. One day, it returned. He is apparently the first person in history to recover from this malady. Read his account. It is inspirational. I can't find any other word for it.

Journal Journal: Tag system is stupid.

Find any article. 9 out of 10 times, if it has a "fud" tag, it'll also have a "notfud" tag.

If you open your mind, people will throw a lot of garbage into it.
