Which doesn't bode well for the continued existence of their "dial-up only" email provider continuing to stay in business and provide that email address. Submitter should migrate them over to gmail or other large, likely-to-have-plenty-of-warning-before-service-stops web mail company sooner, just to inoculate against the possibility of an unexpected cutoff (presumably they stay because they don't want to lose contact with people using that email address, but they will lose contact pretty quick if the provider goes out of business.)

I don't think people understand the Unix philosophy. They think it's about limiting yourself to pipelines, but it's not. It's about writing simple robust programs that interact through a common, relatively high level interface, such as a pipeline. But that interface doesn't have to be a pipeline. It could be HTTP Requests and Responses.

The idea of increasing concurrency in a web application through small, asynchronous event handlers has a distinctly Unix flavor. After all the event handlers tend to run top to bottom and typically produce an output stream from an input stream (although it may simply modify one or the other or do something orthogonal to either like logging). The use of a standardized, high level interface allows you to keep the modules weakly coupled, and that's the real point of the Unix philosophy.

The only reason we dropped behind China recently is because they ramped up their manufacturing so much.

It also doesn't hurt that they have roughly three times the US population. If everyone there bought 1% more manufactured goods the change in GDP would be greater than the total annual production of some entire countries.

I agree... people I talk to at work (decidedly NOT geeks; I'm the lone computer programmer) mostly don't like the show. They call it a show about smart people for dumb people. I guess, in a way, all sitcoms are for dumb people... smart people would be doing something better with their time, but I digress. IMO it's not a show "about" smart people, it's a show about social interactions among really quirky people. The science has very little to do with the show at all... it's an aside; a part of the setting, not the main point.

Actually technically he is right if we kill them all very fast.

nuke 80% of the middle east, full on carpet bomb every square mile with overlapping bursts and you will not have 2 more spring up. you will actually wipe them all out for good and not have any problems with middle eastern terrorisim.

The problem is surviving the 60 year nuclear winter afterwards.
