Very true! I have a friend that hacks all the consoles (in Canada, you NSA bastards) and he constantly has people bringing back consoles. Seems like more hassle than what it is worth, kind of like the old hackable DirecTV cards. Microsoft has made the decision for me, I'm not buying it, ever.

Nerval's Lobster writes: Facebook has added real-time dashboards for measuring the efficiency of its data centers’ internal power and water use. Two dashboards monitor the company’s Prineville, Ore. (here) and Forest City, N.C. data centers (here), measuring both the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness of those facilities, in addition to the ambient temperature and humidity. So far, visitors to the Prineville and Forest City dashboards only see a limited snapshot of the Facebook data: the display only covers 24 hours, and is delayed by 2.5 hours on both sites. Facebook also hasn’t disclosed how many servers the data represents, which could conceivably be used by competitors to get a sense of the social network’s total computing power. The company said that once its data center in Luleå, Sweden, comes online, Facebook will begin adding data from that location, as well. Although Facebook said it provided the information out of a sense of openness, the data—showing PUEs of about 1.09 for both facilities as of press time—is a bit of a boast, as well; as recently as 2011, Uptime Institute said that the average data center’s PUE was approximately 1.8. So far, Facebook hasn’t said whether it will provide access to the dashboards via an API, so third parties can get a better sense of how Facebook is managing power and water use over time, and through various seasons of the year.

4 years ago I was a cop. I loved the job, made roughly $30k per year. Had lots of cop friends. Because I could hardly pay my bills, I resigned and went back into IT. Now, I make roughly $100k per year, telecommuting 100%, chasing carrots that the CEO dangles in front of me and getting $10,000 bonuses. But, I'm not happy. I think it is because I'm a social creature and I live in the middle of the NC mountains where intelligent conversation and perspective is elusive here. Perhaps if I move to say, Miami Beach I'll be happier. Or I was thinking, since I am not tied down to one place, renting places for a month at a time or longer on airbnb.com and traveling the world until I find some place that is free from politics, religion and ignorance. Any places come to mind? lol, didn't think so. Anyways that's kind of why I was looking at Miami Beach, it's like being in another country, but not. And everyone is a tourist. And happy.
NASA Delays Discovery's Final Launch To February 62

Discovery is now slated to launch no earlier than Feb. 3, with the delay allowing NASA engineers more time to analyze why small cracks developed in the shuttle's huge external fuel tank. The cracks have since been repaired, but NASA wants to make sure similar issues don't pose a future concern."

TSA Pats Down 3-Year-Old 1135
3-year-old Mandy Simon started crying when her teddy bear had to go through the X-ray machine at airport security in Chattanooga, Tenn. She was so upset that she refused to go calmly through the metal detector, setting it off twice. Agents then informed her parents that she "must be hand-searched." The subsequent TSA employee pat down of the screaming child was captured by her father, who happens to be a reporter, on his cell phone. The video have left some questioning why better procedures for children aren't in place. I, for one, feel much safer knowing the TSA is protecting us from impressionable minds warped by too much Dora the Explorer.

From the article: 'In September, Krulwich posted a set of daguerreotypes taken by Charles Fontayne and William Porter in Cincinnati 162 years ago, on September 24, 1848. Krulwich was celebrating the work of the George Eastman House in association with the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Using visible-light microscopy, the George Eastman House scanned several plates depicting the Cincinnati Waterfront so that scholars could zoom in and study the never-before-seen details.'"

I'm in Boone, NC. I moved here to be "in the mountains" from "the city".
Now that my kids are in college, I want to get the hell out of here where I can be anonymous. My kids were terrorized in this town because they weren't "religious". They are in college now, in bigger cities. They had the advantage of a good school system here, but all their friends are either pregnant or driving pick up trucks. Since I work from home it doesn't matter where I live anymore, but driving an hour to get to Moe's really, really sucks.
I feel really sorry for anybody that takes one of the Google jobs in Lenoir, NC...that place is the Fast Food capital and gourmet food is Ruby Tuesday's!
