Comment XR Drugs (Score 1) 255

This is a common tactic of drug manufacturers as their patents run our they suddenly find a way to color it pink or something equally trivially unimportant change and try to start the patent clock all over. This is a total subversion of the purpose behind patents.

Or formulate an XR "Extended Release" version of the drug under the same name.

On the other hand, the profits from existing drugs helps pay for research into new drugs to some degree, so could India be similar to a big company that uses Open Source but doesn't release any of their own code?

Bruce, thanks for all the magic you work.

If you're willing to let Technocrat take over the "News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters." mission, it would take off quite nicely. That would be a change from the prior mission, but if you'll do that, I'm willing to submit, edit, and post articles.

Submission + - Can I buy the Classic interface? 3

Max Hyre writes: LWN almost went under a number of years ago because its volunteer editors couldn't afford to keep it up. The readers rose up and insisted that they be allowed to pay for it.

Can we do the same for Classic?

I'm a nerd. I read. I'm the one in the museum ignoring the display and reading the description. I want text, easily accessible, clearly laid out, and plenty of it. I'll pay to keep the UI I know and love.

The Beta has none of those characteristics. The Beta site is repellent, unusable, and unneeded. I won't use it, and if ``Classic'' goes away, I won't visit /., and it'll be a pity.

How much do you actually receive in revenue for each user? I suspect I'll match it to keep the status quo. Ask us what it's worth to us. I'd certainly pay $1/month, and would think about $5/month. I bet that I'm not alone.

And that's an excuse for this rampant idiocy? Because last I heard the mature approach would be to provide constructive criticism, wait and see what happens, and then simply leave if the outcome is unbearable and the feedback is ignored. I voiced my opinion to them and if they do nothing to alleviate my concerns I'll simply stop using the site.

This site has been something special to a number of readers and posters here, and seeing the place go down in flames like Digg did when they ignored their users' feedback is a highly suboptimal emotional experience.

all without turning the whole place into a fucking kindergarten.

Saying that turns the place into the kindergarten you wanted to avoid.

Neither one apparently wants to hear what actual users think, but they probably ignore their own users and support departments while spending money on focus groups.

The thread in TFA has been full of people asking for an application just like the submitter's app, which adds value to their Panasonic TVs, and yet management keeps on pushing the beta site. Oh, what were we talking about again? MyCleanPC?

Submission + - Band seeks compensation after music used in Guantanamo Bay interrogations

time_lords_almanac writes: A Canadian band has sent an invoice to the U.S. Department of Defense after learning that its music was used without permission in "interrogations" of detainees at Guantanamo Bay. The members of Skinny Puppy, who specialize in electronic music, were originally going to make the invoice the cover of their next album until they discovered they could bring legal action against the department. They were also none to happy to learn the purpose their music was being employed for, let alone illegally. The amount of compensation requested? $666,000, of course.

Submission + - Slashdot creates beta site users express theirs dislike (slashdot.org) 4

who_stole_my_kidneys writes: Slashdot started redirecting users in February to its newly revamped webpage and received a huge backlash from users. The majority of comments dislike the new site while some do offer solutions to make it better. The question is will Slashdot force the unwanted change on its users that clearly do not want change?

The new site is a work in progress so Classic Slashdot will be available from the footer for several more months.

If I'm reading that right, that means we're all going to be forced into the awful new version whether we like it or not. Apparently Dice hasn't learned from the spectacular fall from grace that Digg had when they badly botched version 4 of their site, even when many users complained. The parallels here are clear, we the readers have been clear we don't like what we see. That Dice is willing to say "tough luck" anyway gives the best hint why Monster.com is the dominant job board and Dice is just a niche player. Users opinions matter, especially on a user-driven site.

Anyway, I wish Technocrat.net would come back.

If NPR sounded less like MSNBC, I doubt the Republicans would bother with their pittance of the federal budget. NPR is so left wing that commercial talk radio is almost exclusively right wing.

In any case, this program doesn't sound as likely to produce future advances as the space program could.
