Comment Everyone here is a vegetarian, right? (Score 5, Informative) 747

Just want to verify that everyone who is full-on convinced about the negative effects of climate change is a vegetarian. At this point it's essentially indisputable that eating meat -- particularly beef, but all meat due to second order effects aside from methane (increased fuel usage for the additional grain required to grow animals, etc) -- is a significant factor in greenhouse gas production. If every American became vegetarian, the reduction of greenhouse gasses would be greater than swapping out every SUV for an electric car. So, those of you pilloring consumers, government, or industry -- you've already made the switch, right? Cause you wouldn't want to be hypocritical.

I'm a huge fan (in general) of Amazon. Spent more money there than I care to think on. That's irrelevant. The /. story was either a verbatim PR release or written by a PR stooge to be as banal and self-aggrandizing as possible. It wasn't intended to spur discussion but to advertise a product. The submission was obviously not along the lines of "Hey guys, here's a new DNS host, what do you think will be the advantages and disadvantages compared to OpenDNS et al?" That's fine, great, if you want to advertise your product by passing it off as a news article, when there is a clear difference between the two, be prepared to be mocked for doing so.

All promises aren't equal. If I promise to drink at least 3 glasses of water a day, to exercise for at least 30 minutes every day, and also promise to not embezzle from my employer, keeping the first two but not the third may give me a respectable "promise keeping" percentage, but I would guess my employer would be much happier if I kept only the third and not the first two.

Freedom of speech does no good if it only protects the freedom of speech that is generally non-controversial. As to your example, I suggest you google "Piss Christ" and look up how many lynchings the artist endured (hint: exactly zero).

I personally didn't contribute any Muhammed drawings because I thought the whole thing was rather silly, but to say that only certain types of speech deserves protection (and that speech you disagree with, doesn't) kind of undermines the entire concept.

This notwithstanding, if you say you agreed with the law, and thought it had broken it, and agreed with how the law was being applied in this case, well, then, obviously you did the right (moral) thing.

After all, I would guess that most people don't have an objection to jaywalking laws in general -- but if an out of control car were hurtling towards you and you ran across a street to avoid it, I would hope that most people would think that charging you with jaywalking would be asinine.

No, it's like buying Windows Home Premium for $120 and finding out that hey! it also has Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate on that disc. I mean they already did the work before it even shipped, but if I find out later that Windows 7 Professional is the version I really wanted, I'd have to pay to upgrade. How come I can't just install Windows 7 Ultimate instead?

The answer will blow your mind. It's because you didn't pay for it.
