john_turnbull writes: Under equality law (Europe & UK) I assert that scientists — and practising of the scientific method — are protected by international and also UK law..The most direct protection extends to physicists 'natural philosophers' as philosophy specifically protected too. Especially against actions by the state.

Submission + - Former iTunes Engineer Tells Court He Worked to Block Competitors (wsj.com)

loftarasa writes: Yesterday, former engineer Rob Schultz unwillingly testified in court against Apple that he worked on project 'Candy' which 'intended to block 100% of non-iTunes clients' from 2006 to 2007. In his opinion, the work of his team contributed to create 'market dominance' for the iPod. Apple argues, and Schutlz agree, that its intentions were to improve iTunes, not curb competition.

Submission + - Seagate Bulks Up With New 8 Terabyte 'Archive' Hard Drive (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: Seagate's just-announced a new 'Archive' HDD series, one that offers densities of 5TB, 6TB, and 8TB. That's right, 8 Terabytes of storage on a single drive and for only $260 at that. Back in 2007, Seagate was one of the first to release a hard drive based on perpendicular magnetic recording, a technology that was required to help us break past the roadblock of achieving more than 250GB per platter. Since then, PMR has evolved to allow the release of drives as large as 10TB, but to go beyond that, something new was needed. That "something new" is shingled magnetic recording. As its name suggests, SMR aligns drive tracks in a singled pattern, much like shingles on a roof. With this design, Seagate is able to cram much more storage into the same physical area. It should be noted that Seagate isn't the first out the door with an 8TB model, however, as HGST released one earlier this year. In lieu of a design like SMR, HGST decided to go the helium route, allowing it to pack more platters into a drive.

Comment UTC or go home (Score 1) 613

At a prior company I had all of the systems my department used set to UTC, they were not user-facing devices but sure made our jobs easier, there would always be a big hoopla about going in to and out of summertime settings in all the other areas--and massive headaches for everything that didn't work right--meanwhile our staff just relaxed. Even set our wall clocks to UTC for easy reference.

Comment Local AS in Web Production (Score 1) 246

Our local state college has numerous AAS/AS degrees, these are generally designed to teach a skill more advanced then high school that you can make some use of.

The AS in computer information technology has a lot of room for specialization, allowing students to select from a large range of in-field electives in this topic such as:

Website Development, Introduction to E-Commerce, Web Animation, E-Commerce Design, Multimedia Programming, Java Programming, Web Programming, Introduction to Computer Programming, Advanced Web Programming - CGI/Perl

This allows for the AS degree to be customized to the needs (and does NOT focus 15 entire courses on just one topic).
