An antivirus company saying that Windows in insecure would be like BP saying that we should all switch to solar power and stop using oil.

Actually, BP probably wouldn't mind. Despite the conspiracy theories, "oil" companies don't hate alternative energy sources - they're actually large investors in wind, solar, etc.. After all, they're not in it for the oil, they're in it for the money. When solar starts getting big(ger), it's mostly the same cats who will profit. Oil just happens to be easily exploitable at the time.

Submission + - Google plans open source OS release

gasmanpopey writes: "http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8139711.stm

BBC news is reporting that Google are planning on releasing an open source OS (which, i'm sure will come as a surprise to nobody). The article is somewhat vague but the wording implies that the OS will be web based. From TFA:

"We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds," said the blog post written by Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Google's engineering director Linus Upson. Both men said that "the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web" and that this OS is "our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be". To that end, the search giant said the new OS would go back to basics. "We are completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates."
Microsoft

Submission + - MSN Soapbox now in public beta

Pasito writes: Microsoft has opened up its YouTube killer to the public. Soapbox boasts the following features:

Soapbox allows the users to browse and watch videos at the same time.
Amazing video quality.
Go full screen without restarting the video.
RSS feeds for everything: RSS feed for a tag, a search, a users videos, etc.

What will be interesting to see if they can garner the content since for online video sites, content is king. We'll have to wait and see how they tackle the two big issues of these kinds of sites: revenue generation and copyright material.
