Comment The problem is a lack in innovation. (Score 1) 453

why would I want to buy a new PC when my 5 year old quad core 3Ghz AMD system with 12 GB of ram with a R5770 graphics card can do 99.99% of what I want in a desktop. Honestly it boots and runs every program I throw at it almost as fast as the new $1200 I7 I have at work(as perceived by the human Eye and not some benchmark). If the innovation in desktop processors/graphics cards kept up with mobiles I would buy a new desktop. But for now there is no need.

Having just moved to CM 10.2 on my HTC one I must say I disagree with your statement that most people want to expand functionality. I went to CM because I got prompted to install updates to applications that I did not use and AT&T would not let me remove. Guess What AT&T, I no longer have to deal with your stupid Apps on my phone.

I think giving people a 5 year window to commercialize their product would only work if they could extend it providing they are actively licensing their product during the initial exclusivity. Imagine how the Dixy Chicks would have felt if George Bush could use their songs without their permission? I agree that more should be in the public domain but you should be able to extend the copy write for up to 50 years if it proves successful within a short time frame.

My personal experience was the major news organizations exploited this more than Twitter or Facebook. Twitter and Facebook allowed people on the ground to share their experiences where as the news organizations were sitting around talking about the emotional tragedy of an 8 year old boy getting blown up. What i mean to say is that the major news organizations were spinning the story to have the most emotional impact and thus gain the largest audience whereas bloggers each have their own bias. You get a more honest view(not necessarily more accurate) by sampling the blogs than you ever will watching the spin that we call news.

Ultimately the goal is to have a functional computer that does not unreasonably expose you to viruses. If we have a program that scan's all code against all known and potentially unknown vulnerabilities it would adversely impact the function of a computer system. Most of the products that do a halfway decent job of detecting viruses are the ones that cause the greatest impact to performance. The real question is what level of impact are you willing to put up with. I don't think any of the antivirus solutions built for windows offer a perfect solution. My largest gripe with current AV products is that they impact the functionality more than necessary. I would love to get the AV exec who said "Lets ad a firewall that is less functional that the one windows has built in" or "let's put an unnecessary toolbar in IE so that the people who are limited to a 1024x768 display can no longer properly view web-forms optimized for that size display" in a room.

Does anyone else think it is kind of funny that the Microsoft response is (to paraphrase); We did not detect any of the software they say we could not detect. That being said they may have a real point that their software is designed to detect real world threats and not proof of concepts that never leave the lab. Without more in depth analyses than I am willing to do, I can do little more than jump to conclusions based upon my own personal bias.

Comment What do people think about a middle ground. (Score 1) 209

Instead of issuing software patents with a 15 year protection period, how about we give inventors a shortened time-frame (3 years to) sell their product if they have demonstrated that have sales of a product and are willing to license it on the open market we extend protection to a full term (10 years). This way patent trolls would loose their protection unless they are actively leveraging their patent portfolio. Obviously the numbers could be negotiated and the definition of sales would have to be clarified to minimize abuse. Given the rate of change in the software world if you don't have sales within three years, your invention should become public domain so that other people can improve upon it without threat of litigation.
