Comment Journalism... (Score 1) 602

to paraphrase, is also known as "reporting", or revealing information to the public that may not have been widely known. So how exactly is Wikileaks (and for that matter, bloggers, which are part of the same maligned group) *not* Journalism? Definitions and semantics seem to be a major part of the legal arguments that seem to be made about this topic. And it sounds awfully familiar to the arguments I hear related to the whole "games/art" debate.

You should look into the WZR-HP-G300NH. It's a gigabit switch device with a fairly ridiculous amount of memory for a router, with N capability on it. I'm running it at home, and I love it. It did take me about an hour to get the TFTP to take, but it's been running like a champ since. I bought this one back in October, so I got one of the earlier revisions. the current revision of the hardware DOES NOT allow you to install DDWRT; this is speculation, but I believe they made it harder to install because of the Official release of the DD-WRT that's supported by Buffalo, and warrantied, being released in a month's time. I've used it for fairly heavy media streaming (HD), torrenting, remote access for SFTP, VPN, NXserver, even using synergy on wireless machines. It's not even burped since I've had it setup right. Full disclosure, I'm in tech support for a company related to Buffalo, so I may be biased. But I think a 2 year warranty with full phone support is a better deal than what the competition offers. Not that I expect too many of us on /. to need that, but you never know when a power supply might go out.

I personally appreciate the rules, and most netizens seem to love the idea of open standards, open devices, etcetera, but the fact of the matter is that it isn't the government's place to make rules like this. It's odd enough that they need to control the airwaves, but since we gave up our freedom in exchange for less anarchy in the system, I suppose they get to make up the rules. It'll be interesting to see how the court rules on this.

Submission + - 'Sidejacking ' On WiFi

ancientribe writes: As if you need another reason not to use WiFi unprotected, here's one: a researcher has released a tool that lets hackers "sidejack" your machine and access your Web accounts. Called Hamster, the tool basically clones the victim's cookies by sniffing their session IDs and controlling their Website accounts.

Submission + - Mac users' Internet experience to remain seamless 2

thefickler writes: Mac users will continue to see the Internet as it was intended, thanks to the renewal of a font licensing agreement between Microsoft and Apple. At TypeCon2007 Microsoft and Apple announced they have renewed their font licensing agreement, giving Apple users ongoing use of the latest versions of Microsoft Windows core fonts.

Back in 1996 Microsoft started the "Core fonts for the Web" initiative. The idea of this initiative was to create a a standard pack of fonts that would be present on all or most computers, allowing web pages to be displayed consistently on different computers. While the project was terminated in 2002, some of the fonts defined as core fonts for the web have gone on to become known as "web safe fonts", and are therefore widely used by Internet developers.
