Submission + - Nokia N900 Hardware failure - USB port falling off 4

flydeep writes: Nokia's flagship device N900 is suffering a serious usb port design/manufacturing flaw. Apparently many users (~ 20% based on 450 users) are seeing their micro usb ports falling off their $540 devices, some as early as within 6 days of use. Although Nokia has acknowledged the issue in their support forums many weeks ago, their service centers are turning down customers and blaming the users mishandled their phone. This has been picked up many review sites recently, at engadget, here and, here . For a giant company trying to increase their sales in US, they are handling this issue very poorly. There are over 75+ pages discussion at maemo.org where users are venting out their frustration on this issue, very disheartening to see a beautiful open source based device given this treatment. The preliminary understanding is that they are using a surface mount for the usb port and is a serious design flaw, a blog user has documented this design flaw in detail .

Through a meeting fostering open-mindedness, exchange of ideas and learning, propositions for solving technical, social and political problems will be suggested. This is also an opportunity to celebrate free, reclaimed and creative art and technology.
Entropy is welcomed as a means to break artificial boundaries between disciplines and find unexpected ways of doing things that promote liberalization, sharing and reclaiming of technologies.

After the n810, now the n770 can support Android..

Note that n770 is the weakest Nokia Internet Tablet (64MB 252MHz) and near to become obsolete since Nokia did not release any updated firmware for years now (beside hacker's editions which are more buggy than official releases).

Don't set this fantastic little toy aside yet, since it's quite easy to install NITdroid if you follow this tutorial (w/ video)

The project is called NITdroid , the community is growing and a new website is about be online.

All this was possible because android and maemo are opensource and the most important : a few hackers devoted their time on this just because it was possible..."
