Comment Re:Laptops are the wrong form factor for touch (Score 1) 398

Exclusive touch is bad on a device with room for another input device.

Also just as bad are those touch machines that also come with someone who holds a gun to your head and tells you to keep your hands of all alternative input devices. I'm sure all the machines we're talking about will be of that variety.

Submission + - So Oracle Sues Google Over Java Use In Android... (blogspot.com)

David Weiskopf writes: Ok, so Oracle sued Google today for patent and copyright infringement, alleging unauthorized use of Java in Android (see Complaint here) (talk about Google trying to compete with Microsoft on every level; right down to getting sued over Java!). Read more at Ars Technica. Sure, that sounds like World War III and is certain to be a brutal and fascinating fight. Because I would hate, however, for the below tussles to get lost in all the Oracle-Google press, I wanted to make sure everybody was aware of these important cases:

Submission + - Oracle sues Google over Android (mercurynews.com)

suraj.sun writes: Oracle said Thursday that it has filed a federal copyright lawsuit alleging that Google's popular Android operating system was built on Oracle's Java software without permission.

Android, which was first released in late 2008, is used by several computer manufacturers as the operating system that runs smartphones and other computing devices. Oracle's lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for Northern California, accuses Google of infringing on patents and copyrights that Oracle acquired when it bought Sun Microsystems earlier this year.

Google had no immediate comment.

But one analyst called the lawsuit surprising because Sun, whose engineers developed Java, decided several years ago to release key elements of the widely used programming language under an open-source license which allows others to use it freely. "Java is essential for Android," said Al Hilwa, a software expert at the IDC research firm. "But a big chunk of Java is open-source. Since Android has been out there for more than a year, most people would have expected they were in compliance with whatever license terms apply."

An anonymous reader writes: Oracle is finally showing it's true colors and intentions of acquiring Sun. If they cannot figure out a way to make money of Java, what better way than Sue google. This is a shame and shows Oracle can go down to any length to feed it's flamboyant CEO's habits.
