Comment I like the ghost town. (Score 5, Interesting) 146

The ghost town state actually makes it easier to follow a few things and keep up. My Facebook feed is long and Facebook's most-recent sorting likes to pick random dates out of the comments of the postings to "refresh" it. With what I follow on G+, a quick browse will catch me up on all of what I am following. It is a feature to me.

Business can't plan or talk to customers or have any strategy whatsoever without at least some estimate...that's just the real world. If devs don't give estimates, managers have to make estimates. If managers don't make estimates, business makes estimates. You want devs to do the estimating.

I just don't want the boss to be disrespectful to me when the estimate is not accurate. Get us some estimation training or something. Don't give me a lecture. I'm too old for lectures.

Can we get a definition of that for old farts with a UNIX beard like me? I know there was a massive hack and sale of celebrity nude photos for Bitcoin or something. Is that what this refers to? What's a Fappening?

Yeah, I'm gonna Google it, but the editors could add a parenthetical explanation, or a link to Wikipedia, or something. I remember when Slashdot used to use built in links to everything2 - I wish they had transitioned over to Wikipedia so the clueless like me could be more easily informed.

There's a reason I play this song to my kids a lot:

How many roads must a man walk down

Before they call him a man?

How many seas must a white dove sail

Before she sleeps in the sand?

How many times must the cannonballs fly

Before they're forever banned?

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind

The answer is blowing in the wind.

How many years must a mountain exist

Before it is washed to the sea?

How many years can some people exist

Before they're allowed to be free?

How many times can a man turn his head

and pretend that he just doesn't see?

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind

The answer is blowing in the wind.

How many times must a man look up

Before he can see the sky?

How many ears must one man have

Before he can hear people cry?

How many deaths will it take till he knows

That too many people have died?

No, this will never be seen by governing officials. They want you to believe government will never do anything wrong, at least as long as you pick the right people in office. If anything wrong happens, it's because you didn't do the right thing in the last election.

It's basically a religious faith with no evidence.

Submission + - Star Trek Continues is meeting their Kickstarter stretch goals (kickstarter.com) 2

jdavidb writes: A couple of months ago on Slashdot, I learned about Star Trek Continues, a faithful continuation of the Star Trek original series five year mission, lovingly recreated by Vic Mignogna and a dedicated cast and crew. The original Enterprise set from Desilu has been recreated, great scripts have been written, fantastic guest stars have been enlisted including stars from the original series and other Star Trek voyages, and the three episodes filmed so far look like they genuinely came right of the era that produced the original series. Continues has now turned my children on to original series Star Trek, and we eagerly await more episodes.

Continues has two more days to go with a Kickstarter campaign. They have already raised enough money to produce two more episodes and meet their first stretch goal: creating a set for Engineering. Now they are within sight of their next stretch goal: creating a planet set so the Continues Enterprise team can visit strange new worlds and experience the tragic loss of nameless redshirts.
