Submission + - Intel's 80 Core Terascale Chip Explored

Ryan writes: "Yesterday Intel showed off new information on their research program based around the 80-core terascale processor known as Polaris. While the 80 seperate cores setup in a 10x8 2D grid are very simplified with only a couple of floating point units on each tile, the potential for projects like this and their implications on future CPU design is going to be dramatic. PC Perspective has an article that looks at the architecture of the current chip as well as the surrounding landscape for such a design including I/O requirements and software development."

Cosmic Rays and Global Warming 548

Overly Critical Guy writes "The former editor of New Scientist has written an article in the TimesOnline suggesting that cosmic rays may affect global climate. The author criticizes the UN's recent global warming report, noting several underreported trends it doesn't account for, such as increasing sea-ice in the Southern Ocean. He describes an experiment by Henrik Svensmark showing a relation between atmospheric cloudiness and atomic particles coming in from exploded stars. In the basement of the Danish National Space Center in 2005, Svensmark's team showed that electrons from cosmic rays caused cloud condensation. Svensmark's scenario apparently predicts several unexplained temperature trends from the warmer trend of the 20th century to the temporary drop in the 1970s, attributed to changes in the sun's magnetic field affecting the amount of cosmic rays entering the atmosphere."

Submission + - Trivial Remote Exploit on Sun Solaris 10

Jeremy Kister writes: "Errata Security reports about a bug found in the telnet daemon of Solaris 10. From the article:

Basically if you pass a "-fusername" as an argument to the -l option you get full access to the OS as the user specified. In my example I do it as bin but it worked for regular users, just not for root. This combined with a reliable local privilege escalation exploit would be devastating. Expect mass scanning and possibly the widespread exploitation of this vulnerability.
