Submission + - Fallout 3 Designer Talks About Killing Children (edge-online.com)

Heffenfeffer writes: Emil Pagliarulo, lead designer of Fallout 3, talks about Bethesda Softworks eventual decision to omit the player killing children.
The team went through both the pros: "Look at George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire books. Kids play an important part in that series, and violence to those kids is an important part of those stories."
And cons: "You really have to balance out and consider if doing violence to a child in a game is so important to your story that it outweighs any kind of social responsibility you might have.

Submission + - XBox 360 May Not Be Adaquately Cooled 1

Heffenfeffer writes: Kotaku reports that Nikkei Business publication Tech-ON! has enlisted the aid of a thermal design expert to analyze the XBox 360's heat dissepation as a possible reason for the recent costly 3 year extended warranty. The expert's findings were a bit troubling:

"When designing consumer products, it is common to seek a temperature gap of around 10C between exhaust and room temperatures," the thermal design expert said. "The 22C is quite a large gap, in the first place...The heat sink on the graphics LSI is so small, I wonder if it can really cool down the board."

During testing, the heat sink on the graphics LSI reached a temprature of 80 degrees Celsius — 57 degrees above normal room temprature.

When asked if the 60GB PS3 would be no more after the fire sale, he confirmed, "In America, yes." After that, "...what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD $599 version with one game."
