Once you get fast enough (Mach 7 ish), the kinetic energy component of the air is more than the total enthalpy from the unburned oxygen, so even with magic maerials which could withstand arbitrary temperatures and stresses, slowing down the airstream for combustion doesn't work, because you can't get it fast enough again.
