Comment Re:eve online (Score 1) 132

How do you reconcile the following two statements?

However, I also make a point of stressing that Eve is also a game that you get out of it what you put into it.

...very small people who's lives practically revolve around the game...

In the first statement you imply that there is a direct connection between reward and effort in EVE. In the second statement you deride those who appear to be taking advantage of the implication in the first statement.

I like that they brought up Advanced Wars. The beauty of that game is that it looks great on the small screen and does it using techniques familiar to us from the SNES days, just with higher bit depths. But the core gameplay is there, the graphics look great, and the game accomplishes exactly what it set out to do and looks good doing it. I can just imagine some designer coming into the sequel and getting all gaga over making it 3D. Nope, it ain't a 3D game, never was and never should be. There's many good 3D combat games that could be made but they wouldn't be Advanced Wars. If that's the game you want to make, go make it and leave AV alone.

Fun Fact: They already did that. If I recall correctly the Battalion Wars series is an offshoot of Advance Wars, in 3D.

Submission + - Sonic the Hedgehog in Smash Bros. Brawl

zerOnIne writes: "The title pretty much says it all, but the announcement was made today that SEGA's lightning-fast blue rodent will be joining Nintendo's cast of fighters in the next iteration of Smash Bros. Sonic was far and away the most-requested character to join the Smash Bros. series since its inception on the N64, and it would seem that the developers listened."

Submission + - Playstation 3 phones Home

MeanderingMind writes: It seems that the rumors were true. Sony will be launching "Home" this fall for the Playstation 3. Home combines many of the features of Microsoft's Live service and Nintendo's Mii Channel into a product reminiscent of Second Life.

Submission + - Captain America is dead...

The 4th State writes: "Marvel has killed off their oldest hero...such attrocities have not been seen since 1993 when DC killed off Superman. This was first read on foxnews.com, http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,257398,00.html . It brings great sadness to such a great hero. After 9/11 many Americans feld back to this comic as he brought hope to a much needing public. What are your thoughts? was this a good move by Marvel? what is coming next??? are they spawning a new comic, or is this the end of the series?"

Vista Security — Too Little Too Late 483

Thomas Greene of The Register has a fairly comprehensive review of Vista and IE7 user security measures. The verdict is: better but not adequate, and mostly an attempt to shift blame onto the user when things go wrong. From the review: "[Vista is] a slightly more secure version than XP SP2. There are good features, and there are good ideas, but they've been implemented badly. The old problems never go away: too many networking services enabled by default; too many owners running their boxes as admins and downloading every bit of malware they can get their hands on."

Submission + - Bionic eye could restore vision

MattSparkes writes: "A new bionic eye could restore vision to the profoundly blind. A prototype was tested on six patients and "within a few weeks all could detect light, identify objects and even perceive motion again. For one patient, this was the first time he had seen anything in half a century." The user wears a pair of glasses that contain a miniature camera and that wirelessly transmits video to a cellphone-sized computer in the wearer's pocket. This computer processes the image information and wirelessly transmits it to a tiny electronic receiver implanted in the wearer's head."

Submission + - Illinois Bill to Ban Social Networking Sites

AlexDV writes: "Library blogger Michael Stephens is reporting that Illinois Senator Matt Murphy (R-27, Palatine) has filed a senate bill which "Creates the Social Networking Web site Prohibition Act. Provides that each public library must prohibit access to social networking Web sites on all computers made available to the public in the library. Provides that each public school must prohibit access to social networking Web sites on all computers made available to students in the school." The bill's full text can be found here.

What is it with politicians introducing crazy Internet-related legislation lately? Could this bill have something to do with the fact that prominent Democratic presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and John Edward are using social networks as a core component of their campaigns? Hmm..."

Submission + - Low Earth Orbit Junk Yard Nearly Full

vlado4 writes: "The New York Times has an article on how the amount of space junk in Earth Orbit is at critical levels. Additionally they have great graphics of the nearly 1000 new pieces resulting from testing the new Chinese anti-satellite weapon as well as the damage to Hubble's solar array. Space Debris (Wikipedia) appear to be a difficult problem to deal with and may hinder future space exploration. Somehow this is not surprising considering the tendency for humans to trash every environment they come in contact with."

Submission + - Big Bang Enigma Solved

newsblaze writes: "Astro-Cosmologist Jerome Drexler says the Big Bang may have satisfied the Second Law of Thermodynamics. In Big Bang Enigma May be Solved by Relativistic Dark Matter, Drexler, former NJIT Research Professor of physics, says the Big Bang was actually a Relativistic Big Bang. The temperature of a Relativistic Big Bang could be estimated by averaging the energies of the relativistic protons and helium nuclei. The estimated temperature would be extremely high and probably of the same order of magnitude as the temperature scientists estimate for the Big Bang. Nevertheless, the Relativistic Big Bang would have the very low entropy that the Second Law of Thermodynamics requires for the "beginning of time.""

Ian Weller writes: "Stephen Colbert, on his Comedy Central TV show "The Colbert Report", recently caused another problem on Wikipedia: In his "The Word" segment, he brought up Microsoft's hiring of a kid in Australia to edit pages on the freely-editable encyclopedia to make their products sound more appealing to consumers, which he called "wikilobbying". Colbert fought back by offering "five bucks" to the first person who edited the page to say "reality has become a commodity." Well, it happened — and it stayed that way for 12 and a half hours until the page was finally reverted. Proves that being a celebrity means that you can control the world, in a sense..."

Submission + - What should go in a Linux box?

alexwcovington writes: Now that the dreaded Vista is here, I've had it with Microsoft once and for all. My next computer will run on Linux, and the time is now. I'm browsing online catalog sites for parts right now. My budget is about US$1200, so I won't be buying anything bleeding edge. What I will need are components that have good Linux support, so I can set it all up without extensive research.

I know you're wondering why I'm starting in so late. I tried to switch last year using Slackware on my vintage 2003 box, but even my best Linux-hacker friends had trouble figuring out how to get ATi's Radeon 9500 driver package to work; thus my concern about compatibility issues. I need parts that will go with Linux like butter on bread. Warm butter, not cold, mind you!

So what's the best side of the Intel/AMD, nVidia/ATi equations for a Linux box, or are they suddenly equal in '07? Do I need to worry about motherboard chipsets at all? What vendors are particularly bad and good as far as Linux support goes?
