Comment Re:Powerpoint sucks in schools (Score 1) 467

My 7th Grade History teacher would come into class with a sheaf of papers. She would then start writing on the chalkboard and we were supposed to copy what she wrote down word for word. There was no interaction with the students or any discussion of any of the material.

It's not the tools that are at fault here. It's the teachers - or more specifically, the lazy ones.

Brian Eno Releases Second iPhone App 196

Brian Eno, or as he is known to many in my office, "God," has released his second iPhone App. A followup to Bloom, this one is called Trope and supposedly creates darker music. You create music by drawing shapes on the iPhone's screen.

I sleep on the couch in my office. It's a little bit of a pain having to go to the lockers in the next building to shower but the monthly exercise is good for me.

My job is secure. I'm making exactly as much as I was before. However, I've been able to refinance my mortgage to a much lower interest rate.

Also, the prices of food, gas and many other things I buy are going down.

This downturn has been awesome for me and my family so far. I have more money to spend and it's going a lot further than it was just a short while ago.

The Internet

Vista a Threat to Internet Freedom? 479

BBC columnist Bill Thompson warns readers that new DRM technology, especially that found in Vista, is damaging the freedoms that the internet was based on. "The freedom of expression that was once available to users of the Internet Protocol is being stripped away. Our freedom to play, experiment, share and seek inspiration from the creative works of others is increasingly restricted so that large companies can lock our culture down for their own profit. [...] governments and corporations around the world are making a concerted effort to dismantle the open internet and replace it with a regulated and regulable one that will allow them to impose an 'architecture of control.'"

Blu-ray's Hardware Woes Stacking Up 196

An anonymous reader writes "The bad news just keeps on coming for Blu-ray. First, Sony halved its U.S./Japanese launch shipments of its Blu-ray powered PlayStation 3, blaming a shortage of blue lasers. Then, in the last two weeks, both Sony and Pioneer delayed the releases of their new Blu-ray players, refusing to cite reasons. And this week, at Blu-ray backer LG's annual dealer show, a previously announced LG Blu-ray player was nowhere to be found. LG product development director Tim Alessi had this to say: 'We will provide an announcement when the time is right.'"

Surprises in Microsoft Vista's EULA 385

androthi writes "Scott Granneman takes a look at some surprises in Microsoft Vista's EULA that limit what security professionals and others can do with the new operating system. You want to post benchmarking results? Well, Microsoft may now have a say in it. Vista's EULA no longer shows up on Microsoft's software licensing page, but does still exist — also take note of Windows DRM deciding what you can and can not listen to, and Defender deciding and removing what it considers spyware automatically (by default)."
