Wine 1.2 Released 427

David Gerard writes "Stuck with that one Windows app you can't get rid of? Rejoice — Wine 1.2 is officially released! Apart from running pretty much any Windows application on Unix better than 1.0 (from 2008), major new features include 64-bit support, bi-directional text, and translation into thirty languages. And, of course, DirectX 9 is well-supported and DirectX 10 is getting better. Packages should hit the distros over the weekend, or you can get the source now."

X-Ray Burst Temporarily Blinds NASA Satellite 117

RedEaredSlider writes with news that a recently-detected gamma-ray burst, originating roughly five billion light-years away, was powerful enough to temporarily blind NASA's Swift satellite. Phil Plait has an interesting writeup on the event. Quoting: "Swift, normally easily able to handle the X-ray load from these explosions, was overwhelmed, and actually shut down temporarily when software detected that the cameras onboard might get damaged by the flood of light. That’s never happened before. The burst was so bright in X-rays it put other GRBs to shame: slamming Swift with 143,000 X-ray photons per second, it was 5 times brighter than the previous record holder, and nearly 200 times as bright as a typical GRB! Weirdly, it didn’t look out of the ordinary in visible light."

You may have misunderstood Captain Splendid.

Such an installation *may* have impact on the wild life (local ecology), depending on how obtrusive it is.

"The osmotic power plant guides sea water and fresh water into separate chambers, which are divided by an artificial membrane."

Seems like it could be done without harming local ecology, but I do not know. Do you?

Supreme commander (with exp Forged alliance) is an innovative (OMG! using scroll wheel for awesome zoom!) RTS game quite unlike e.g. C&C. IMO it's a damn good war game.

The game stress your CPU a lot ( calculating arch from ammo of hundreds or thousands of units, the path of moving units, AI etc), you'll want a faster Intel Core 2 Duo or better.

One option is to take the Mensa test.
If you pass it, you get access to your national Mensa forum. There you may find most kinds of people of both gender and different social events to join.
People there tend to be civil and tolerant and in general think before they post/speak (if sometimes only out of fear of being regarded as not-so-smart :)

You need to find the individuals you like, and to initiate contact with them.
