Comment And I want rainbows and unicorns! (Score 1) 305

Just because you want something, it doesn't mean you'll get it.
We'll see if $120 Million is enough to make a difference.
The problem with gasoline is that is has such great energy density, about 46 Mega-joules per kilogram.
The best batteries currently are Lithium with an energy density of 1.8 Mega-Joules per kilogram.

Comment Re:CRC (Score 1) 440

It would take about 12 hours to read the 5TB and compute SHA-1 for everything. (assumes 120MB/sec disk)
(5*10^12)/(120^10^6)=41666 sec = 11.57 hours.
After that you have 4M*(256 bytes metadata+20bytes/hash)=~1GB of memory.
Everything fits into an in memory hash table, lookups O(1) proceed at 1 lookup/microsecond.
It takes another 20 minutes or so to delete the duplicate files. project done.
And I have a perl script that does this that I wrote in 1999, email me and I'll send it.

$19.95 for a beta of something you can whip up in about an hour of shell scripting.

Hell, I wrote exactly what people are talking about here in an afternoon in college - I even did both SHA and MD5, because I ended up finding a SHA collision between one of the Quake 3 files and a Linux system file.

I think your full of shit if you found an SHA collision.
Plesae provide an example.

I call your bullshit, but I don't have enough chips, I guess I'm all in.

I probably should have said something more insightful like, hmm, I didn't know facebook and google didn't work on mobile devices,
oh, wait, they do
In fact, I probably use google maps more on my iphone than on my desktop.

I agree, the middlemen is not only unnecessary but are making life more difficult and trying to justify their existence.
I want to want shows when I want them without commercials and I'm willing to pay for that.
I have a DVR on Cox Cable and Netflix on my PS3. Shows that are on HBO and Showtime are available the next day on HBO and Showtime HD indemand so I don't bother recording them. I only use the DVR for broadcast shows that include commercials.

The basic problem is this, broadcast television is an anachronism that hasn't died yet but will soon.
The technology vendors(Google, Apple, Netflix, Hulu, etc ) are lining up to deliver a good content experience because the broadcaster (CBS,NBC,ABC, FOX, etc) haven't done it.

Fine-Structure Constant Maybe Not So Constant 105

Kilrah_il writes "The fine-structure constant, a coupling constant characterizing the strength of the electromagnetic interaction, has been measured lately by scientists from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia and has been found to change slightly in light sent from quasars in galaxies as far back as 12 billion years ago. Although the results look promising, caution is advised: 'This would be sensational if it were real, but I'm still not completely convinced that it's not simply systematic errors' in the data, comments cosmologist Max Tegmark of MIT. Craig Hogan of the University of Chicago and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill., acknowledges that 'it's a competent team and a thorough analysis.' But because the work has such profound implications for physics and requires such a high level of precision measurements, 'it needs more proof before we'll believe it.'"
