Submission + - Doctors Baffled, Intrigued by Girl Who Doesn't Age (go.com)

phyrebyrd writes: Brooke Greenberg is the size of an infant, with the mental capacity of a toddler. She turned 16 in January. Brooke hasn't aged in the conventional sense. Dr. Richard Walker of the University of South Florida College of Medicine, in Tampa, says Brooke's body is not developing as a coordinated unit, but as independent parts that are out of sync. She has never been diagnosed with any known genetic syndrome or chromosomal abnormality that would help explain why. Brooke's hair and her nails are the only two things that grow, Howard said. "She has pajamas and outfits that are 10 or 12 years old," he said.

Submission + - Teen strip-search ruled unconstitutional (nytimes.com) 1

yuna49 writes: The US Supreme Court today ruled 8-1 that the strip search of a 13-year-old girl by officials in an Arizona middle school was unconstitutional. However, by a vote of 7-2, the Court also ruled that the individual school officials could not be held personally liable. A suit for damages against the school district itself is still going forward. We discussed this case at length back in March when the Court decided to hear the case on appeal.

Were Neanderthals Devoured By Humans? 502

Hugh Pickens writes "The Guardian reports that a Neanderthal jawbone covered in cut marks similar to those left behind when flesh is stripped from deer provides crucial evidence that humans attacked Neanderthals, and sometimes killed them, bringing back their bodies to caves to eat or to use their skulls or teeth as trophies. 'For years, people have tried to hide away from the evidence of cannibalism, but I think we have to accept it took place,' says Fernando Rozzi, of Paris's Centre National de la Récherche Scientifique. According to Rozzi, a discovery at Les Rois in south-west France provides compelling support for that argument. Previous excavations revealed bones that were thought to be exclusively human. But Rozzi's team re-examined them and found one they concluded was Neanderthal." (Continued, below.)

Submission + - Warsow 0.4 released

sepht writes: After 8 months of development, Warsow, a free software first-person shooter PC game, has released their next major release. After a fairly subjective article proclaimed Warsow the best community-developed open source shooter game, it seems the project might have something to prove. Major additions include a HLTV-like spectator server called WarsowTV, bump-mapping, ingame tutorial demos, new maps, new gamemodes, a new twist on CTF, a MacOSX client, and more friendly movement. Submission + - Free software FPS games compared (linux-gamers.net)

An anonymous reader writes: Linux-gamers.net has posted a well-encompassing, although harsh, comparison of free software shooters. While lengthy, it compares seven open source shooter games. Although the article can be a bit hard to follow at times, few have gone to compare and carefully examine the genre before. The author ranks the games in the following order (best to worst): Warsow, Tremulous, World of Padman, Nexuiz, Alien Arena, OpenArena, and Sauerbraten. In making these choices, it claims claims to use gameplay, design, innovation and presentation as criteria and includes a short history of free software shooters in the introduction.
