The deal advances Linux-Microsoft Windows Server interoperability, furthers research and development collaboration, and provides IP assurances for Turbolinux users. A key customer component to the agreement is a collaborative "single sign-on" solution. According to a recent study released by SupportSoft Inc., a provider of technology problem resolution software provider, password problems — including the need to reset them — make up one out of every five calls received by corporate IT help desks. Hugh Pickens writes: "Timothy D. Cook, Chief Operating Officer at Apple, disclosed during Apple's conference call to discuss their fourth quarter earnings that they estimate that 250,000 of the 1.4 Million iPhones that have been sold were bought by people intending to unlock the phone.

[The elasticity in demand with the price drop] enabled us to far surpass our expectation of hitting around a million units cumulatively by the end of the quarter. Some number of these were sold to people that have an intention to unlock and [while] we don't know precisely how many people are doing that, our current guess is there is probably 250,000 of the 1.4 million that we sold where people had bought them with the intention of doing that. Many of those happened after the price cut.
Apple knows how many iPhones have been sold and how many have been activated with ATT. The difference is the number that are unlocked."

PhotoGuy writes: CNN Money/Fortune is reporting on a great quarter by Apple. For those of you who keep saying Apple is primarily an iPod company, and other products are secondary, should note that Macintosh sales accounted for 64% of the company's revenue (up 34%). Aside from straightening out those who dismiss Apple as not being focused on the Mac line, this provides some comfort to me; knowing how integral the Mac and OSX is to Apple's ongoing success certainly helps ensure its ongoing future and support.

phildawg writes: "As of Friday, 10/19/2007, users of software involving steam have been shutdown and unable to play due to a "Wrong Territory" error. It appears a distributor in Asia was selling software against Valve's terms of sale agreement and Valve is now trying to rectify the situation. Basically, if your version of the game came from this distributor, the CD keys are no longer valid for play outside of that Territory. This seems to have hit eBay purchases the hardest. Unfortunately for many people over the past 3 years, these games all of a sudden just turned off Friday night at about 5pm. There has been little response from Valve and a 15 page thread has been deleted from their forum today as people who had purchased games for close to the full US retail price have been told to contact the store of purchase for a refund. Even for purchases that are 3 years old... Valve is reviewing each individual case, but before the thread was deleted, nobody reported success.

Circuit City ran the Orange box on sale for 37.99 with free shipping. People were purchasing the game for 32-36 dollars off eBay. These were not significant savings. These games generally shipped from Thailand, Australia, and some actually purchased these games while visiting the countries. All have been told, contact the store for a return. Since when do you crack down on customers instead of the distributor?

The following is a 24 page thread where people initially found a great deal they thought at only 26 dollars (please remember that on eBay, people paid on avg only a few dollars less, and this does not just affect US residents but also Australian, and for some these were actually purchased from Brick and Mortar retailers in Australia since it is relatively close to Thailand and they were using the distributor most likely unbeknown to them.)

An anonymous reader writes: I work for a growing IT shop with around 35 employees. We currently use half a dozen different programs to manage our helpdesk, billing, scheduling, and client relations. We're tired of the mess and are now looking for a piece of software that allows us to manage as much as possible in one system. Management insists whatever we go with is backed by service and support contracts, so a lot of open source options are out. I've looked at dozens of "all-in-one" CRM and ERP packages (and so far the leading choices are the Allbase Suite and Service CEO), but I don't know what to look for. Can anybody recommend a flexible system or point out some features I should look for?

A replacement section of the bridge was built in a nearby park, and will be hauled in place with heavy lift equipment, with a projected downtime for the major freeway of less than 24 hours. The results, published in the Royal Society journal is intriguing to say the least. 1700 years ago, three out of every four individuals belonged to a different haplotype. In modern Europe, the number is only one in three. The researchers blame a combination of plague, selection of dominant lineages and culturally-inflicted distortions. The researchers say more work needs to be done, but are unclear if this involves archaeology or experiments involving skewing the data in the local female population."

Taking in money on this scale puts a different slant on the motives behind the Swedish filesharing site, and could open up the runners of the site to prosecution for profiting from copyright infringement.
