The advantage to running Linux and BSD is they are somewhat niche systems, therefore not necessarily dumbed down for dolts like you, and therefore much less desirable for malware authors to target, although no OS is perfectly unbreakable. Your M$-xx and iOS-xx are easy targets for malware, and that is a fact, not so much on my side of the fence.

For example, It features a note pad app that deletes my notes at random intervals, usually in less time than it takes to follow up on said memo. Ever program on a Win95 system? After spending an hour typing code, you go to save your work, only to see the system lock up and crash .. and you lose a pile of good starter code. I quickly learned to save after every line of code. Purely asinine ..

Finally came win2k and some improvement but a whole new learning curve to install and configure properly. I reinstalled that over and over for a month until I has a system that stopped crashing

From time to time I give the latest release of Ubuntu/Mint another look @ to see whats happening on the bleeding edge. But every time after a few short weeks the system seems too unstable, and/or some feature/s I use gets squirrely and I end up returning to the latest Debian, currently Wheezy.

Ubuntu/Mint is what you get when you take Debian Sid, polish it somewhat, slap your name on it as yours, and throw it out there with great fanfare and media hype as the latest and greatest.
