Submission + - Let's settle patent dispute in Quake match (tumblr.com)

markass530 writes: "Two weeks ago, Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson and his studio Mojang received a 15-page letter from Bethesda's lawyers stating that the name of his upcoming game "Scrolls" infringes upon Bethesda's own "The Elder Scrolls" trademark, and could possibly stir up some confusion when the fifth Elder Scrolls installment launches in November.

"Remember that scene in Game of Thrones where Tyrion chose a trial by battle in the Eyrie?" Persson writes. "Well, let’s do that instead! I challenge Bethesda to a game of Quake 3 [Arena]. Three of our best warriors against three of your best warriors. We select one level, you select the other, we randomize the order. 20 minute matches, highest total frag count per team across both levels wins.""

Submission + - Chinese workers write a letter to Apple (reuters.com)

<035ssakram>" rel="nofollow">markass530 writes: "Several workers from Wintek, which make touch screens for Apple devices, has written a letter to Steve Jobs regarding the hardships they had to endure, particularly with regards to the use of hexyl hydride, also called n-hexane, from May 2008 to August 2009

Part of the letter read: "This is a killer, a killer that strikes invisibly. From when hexyl hydride was used, monthly profits at Apple and Wintek have gone up by tens of millions every month, the accumulated outcome of workers' lives and health."."

Submission + - Momentus XT hybrid drive causing headaches (engadget.com)

markass530 writes: "Owners of Seagate's Momentus XT are facing serious issues with their drives — despite glowing initial reviews, a number of long-term users claim that the drives chirp, crash, stutter, and freeze with alarming regularity, particularly when installed in a Mac. Seagate forumgoers speculate these are symptoms of the XT's magnetic platters spinning down inappropriately, due to an overzealous power management scheme. Seagate is working to fix the issues, so thats the good news."

Submission + - UFC President tells pirates to prepare for jail (mmajunkie.com)

markass530 writes: While this past weekend's "UFC 126: Silva vs. Belfort" event will always be remembered for the front kick heard 'round the world, UFC president Dana White said the card might also be known as the launching point for the future of the company.

In conjunction with the New York-based NeuLion, Inc., the UFC offered an enhanced pay-per-view broadcast at UFC.tv, and White believes the format is the wave of the future.

“The very forceful actions taken by Mr. (Preet) Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York and Mr. (John T.) Morton, the Director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, against these parasitic websites is very welcome news," White stated. "The criminal theft of pay-per-view events has resulted in the loss of millions of dollars of revenue to not only the UFC and its fighters, but has also deprived federal, state and local government of their rightful entitlement to significant tax revenue.

We're fighting it hard," White said. "Listen, I said it when we made this announcement, and I'll say it again, people are going to jail."

Windows

Submission + - Microsoft to work with windows phone 7Jailbreakers (osnews.com)

markass530 writes: Microsoft had a sit down with the first people to jailbreak their windows phone 7. Seems like good progress was made. This seems like a good approach to me. It would be great if Sony, Apple, Microsoft, and several Android phone makers would implement a simple development switch in their phones — these would obviously void the warranty, but it would give hackers the opportunity to actually own their devices without fear of having to jailbreak all over again whenever an update arrives.
Sony

Submission + - Sony Lawyers Expand Dragnet, Targeting Anybody Pos (wired.com)

markass530 writes: Sony is threatening to sue anybody posting or “distributing” the first full-fledged jailbreak code for the 4-year-old PlayStation 3 gaming console.

What’s more, the company is demanding that a federal judge order Google to surrender the IP addresses and other identifying information (.pdf) of those who have viewed or commented about the jailbreak video on a private YouTube page. The game maker is also demanding that Twitter provide the identities of a host of hackers who first unveiled a limited version of the hack in December.

Submission + - NoteSlate (uncrate.com)

markass530 writes: At first It seemed like something for the knuckeldraggers out there, but then s I read more, it intrigued me. It's price point is perfect, and heck — it plays mp3's.
Microsoft

Submission + - Microsoft outs Yahoo as bandwidth hog (guardian.co.uk) 1

markass530 writes: Microsoft and Yahoo have finally acknowledged that Yahoo is, as has long been suspected, culpable for Windows Phone 7's excessive data usage. Microsoft admitted to a problem a couple of weeks ago, faulting an a third-party service but infuriatingly refusing to specify which third party.

This silence was unfortunate, as it left users with no good way to avoid the problem: given the potential to run up substantial bills, this was indefensibly irresponsible of Microsoft. Now that Yahoo! Mail has been confirmed as the problematic provider, users can mitigate the issue by setting any Yahoo accounts to check for mail only manually.

Submission + - Duke Nukem Forever release date set... May 3rd (take2games.com)

markass530 writes: "On May 3, you may actually be able to see your breathe in Hell when it begins to freeze over. The unbelievable has happened, and after years of jokes, years of failed attempts, years as the poster boy for video game franchises that seemed doomed to remain in limbo, Take-Two Interactive has announced that Duke Nukem Forever will hit stores on May 3. If you need a moment to process that, go ahead, it’s understandable."
Apple

Submission + - OS X The most dangerous OS and other danger (trendmicro.com) 5

markass530 writes: "Trend Micro released a rather interesting report about Apple’s Mac OS X, and it’s not going to make Mac users happy. The report is calling OS X the most dangerous OS to run, siting Apple’s slow cycle of patches and updates, as well as their obsession with secrecy.

Apple has enjoyed a reputation as being virus free, something they played up with great glee during the “I’m a Mac” ad campaign. The problem is now that Apple is gaining more market share, they’ll become a more attractive target for malware and viruses. Trend Micro used last November’s 644mb patch as example, citing the size of the update and the fact that it took five months to be released."

Submission + - RIAA, MPAA recruit MasterCard to help them police (myce.com)

markass530 writes: "Two weeks ago, MasterCard felt the wrath of Anonymous Operation Payback-style DDoS attacks after refusing to process payments that were intended to fund WikiLeaks, the website which began leaking confidential US diplomatic cables last month. Now, the company is preparing to head down another controversial path by pledging to deny transactions which support websites that host pirated movies, music, games, or other copyrighted content."

Submission + - Asus netbook will have a takeaway phone (theinquirer.net)

markass530 writes: "TAIWANESE MANUFACTURER Asus is planning a netbook with a slot-in mobile phone that will double as a 3G communications module, according to a UK distributor.

The arrangement offers an easy way to use the same SIM card and data account for both a phone and a portable computer.

The phone module, from an Israeli company called Modu, is already on sale, together with an array of feature-phone shells and other devices that it's designed to slot into."

Submission + - Arm based servers coming in 2011 (tomshardware.com)

markass530 writes: "Arm Holdings chief executive officer Warren East told EE Times Wednesday that servers based on ARM multicore processors should arrive within the next twelve months. The news confirms previous speculation stemming from Google's acquisition of Agnilux and a recent job advertisement posted by Microsoft. East said that the current architecture, designed for client-side computing, can also be used in server applications."
