Submission + - openSUSE 11.0 Beta 1 Has Been Released (opensuse.org)

Francis Giannaros writes: "The first beta release for openSUSE 11.0 is now available. Some of the highlights include the fast package management, KDE 3.5.9 and 4.0.3, GNOME 2.22.1 and an impressive new installer using Qt4 CSS-like stylesheets. Changes behind the scenes include switching to RPM LZMA payload, making RPMs smaller (faster to download), and quicker to decompress (faster installation)."

Submission + - HP to also Preload Machines with the Linux Desktop

apokryphos writes: "Hewlett-Packard has become the next major OEM to preload SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop on selected notebooks and desktop machines. As Jaffe notes, one of the biggest obstacles to making Linux a credible desktop alternative to Windows has been the lack of OEM partners willing to preload and support the operating system. This deal with HP is yet another milestone down that road."

Submission + - Good-bye NetWare, hello Linux: Novell OES 2.0

apokryphos writes: "Novell's long journey from NetWare to Linux is finally complete, with Open Enterprise Server 2.0. Linux-Watch takes a look at the newly-released OES 2.0: "Now, with OES 2.0, the NetWare operating system kernel, NetWare 6.5 SP7, is still there if you run it, but it runs on top of the Xen hypervisor. You can also run the NetWare services, or a para-virtualized instance of NetWare, on top of Xen with the SLES (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server) 10 SP 1 kernel. So, if you're wedded to NetWare and its way of doing things, you don't have to wave good-bye to it.""

And to help manage all of the developers and project managers who want to help out...They really care about helping make Linux support as many devices as possible, with fully open-source drivers.""

The source and packages for Fedora, Mandriva, openSUSE and SLED are available in the openSUSE Build Service, with Debian and Ubuntu packages following shortly."
IBM

Submission + - IBM, Novell launch "Big Green Linux" Initi (cnn.com)

apokryphos writes: "CNN reports:

"IBM announced a Big Green Linux initiative to help its clients further integrate Linux into the enterprise as a way to reduce costs and energy consumption by building cooler data centers. The Big Green Linux initiative supports Project Big Green, a broad commitment that IBM announced in May to sharply reduce data center energy consumption for IBM and its clients.

IBM's Linux Technology Center has also been involved in contributing a number of recent features to the Linux kernel for scaling CPU clock speed and voltage and keeping idle CPUs in a 'tickless,' low-power state longer; all of which make Linux more power efficient in datacenters.""

"AMD is helping to ensure that the openSUSE Build Service continues to be an important collaboration and development platform for developers of all distributions," said Terri Hall, AMD vice president of Commercial Systems Marketing. "AMD recognizes the value of the open source development model, and by providing hardware for the openSUSE Build Service, we are able to actively participate in the continued innovation for which the open source community is known."

Are these continued announcements of huge support from large OEMs an indication of a new era?"
