Why do you have to put music on your file system? If you're taking it from CD, it goes straight into iTunes. If you're taking it from iTMS, it goes straight from iTunes. If you're downloading it (legally or illegally), it goes into your download folder, and then you'd have to either move it to your library folder or just load it into iTunes. In 2 of those 3 cases, it doesn't require you touching the file system at all, and in the 3rd, it's no more steps (and possibly fewer).

Comment Uhh... what? (Score 4, Insightful) 668

We don't use iTunes because there's no credible competitor - we use iTunes because it links to the iPod and/or the AppleTV and/or Front Row. brFurther, I don't understand why people always whine about "not monitoring a folder for library changes." Who cares? I mean, apparently some people do, because they whine about it... but the iTunes Library is your music manager, not your OS folders. Treat it that way and monitoring a folder becomes irrelevant.

Submission + - Another (Big) nail in HD-DVDs coffin. (nytimes.com) 5

Binkleyz writes: Netflix has decided to abandon the HD-DVD format in favor of BluRay. Up to now, Netflix had been supplying both formats to its customers, but with this latest decision by the predominant online movie rental outfit, many of the adherents to HD-DVD have lost their primary source of content.

Submission + - Warner Bros backs Blu-ray Disc Exclusively (computerworld.com)

Lucas123 writes: "After backing both high-def formats, Warner Bros has just announced it will be dropping HD DVD in May and putting its weight exclusively behind Blu-ray Disc, in what will no doubt be an enormous blow to Toshiba-backed HD DVD. The change of heart by Hollywood's biggest seller of DVDs apparently came after it decided the format war is confusing to consumers and a stumbling block for a potential multibillion-dollar industry."

Feed Engadget: Warner goes Blu-ray exclusive (engadget.com)

We've all been wondering what to make of those whispers that Warner was indeed going Blu-ray exclusive, and apparently, those rumblings are true. Based on a breaking release, Warner Bros. Entertainment will be releasing its high-definition titles "exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year." According to Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, the move is a "strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want," and he also noted that "the window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger." Notably, Warner will continue to release on both HD DVD and Blu-ray until May 2008, but after that, it's BD for life for this studio. Oh, and while there's nothing official mentioning any sort of payoff, we're hearing that quite a sum was dished out to make this happen. Full release posted after the jump.

Submission + - Telecom Immunity Fight Begins in Senate

Hugh Pickens writes: "A bill may be brought to the Senate for a vote as early as today that would provide retroactive immunity to AT&T, Verizon and other companies that helped the administration violate the civil liberties of Americans by listening in on phone calls knowing there were no warrants. Since the Bush administration's program of eavesdropping and data mining of information from Americans without obtaining warrants came to light, lawsuits have moved forward in courts, and more and more details have come out about the program's extent and the telecoms' involvement. Senator Chris Dodd had placed a "hold" on the legislation, which ordinarily blocks a bill from coming to vote, but Senate Majority Leader Harry is ignoring the hold and Dodd has promised to filibuster the bill. "Providing retroactive immunity to companies that may have violated the law will set a dangerous precedent," said Dodd. "Companies who violated the trust of thousands of their customers will be immune to prosecution and the details of their actions will stay hidden." The latest word from the Dodd camp regarding what will happen on the FISA bill is that, Dodd will take the Senate floor and not yield. People who would like to support Dodd's filibuster can leave your message here and Dodd's office will review them and choose those for Dodd to read on the Senate floor."

Submission + - iTunes Plus is worlds largest DRM-free music store (appleinsider.com)

drhamad writes: "With all the stories about Amazon's DRM-free music store lately, people seem to have forgotten that iTunes Plus has been doing this for far longer, offering 256kbps DRM-free MP4's, rather than Amazon's 256kbps DRM-free MP3's. As we now have seen, Apple just dropped their price to $0.99 per song (Amazon, by contrast, offers songs between $0.89 and $3.87, roughly). What hasn't been mentioned is the sheer size of the iTunes Plus store — over 2,000,000 tracks."

Submission + - New Apple iPod's Announced (apple.com)

True ChAoS writes: "The new Apple iPods have been announced and you can view them on Apples own site (http://www.apple.com/ipod/whichipod/). Those wanting a full screen video iPod are almost in luck — the new iPod touch is available providing a full touch screen display and wi-fi connectivity but unfortunately it also ships with a paltry 8-16Gb Hard Drive. The classic has been updated with an all metal shell and now offers up to 160Gb of storage. Finally, the Nano now has a wide screen whilst maintaining it's tiny dimensions."
