I was even more disappointed in Rivendell. The books (Hobbit and LOTR) describe it as this interesting place full of elves (and occasionally others) with neat stuff in ever nook and around every corner. In the movie it was a big place where Elrond and Arwen lived. I know it doesn't push the plot forward, but couldn't they have hinted that it was more than that? Couldn't they have shown other people there, besides the main characters?

There was an article on boston.com (can't find the link) last summer. They were interviewing people in the area (mostly NH) who worked for the US Forest Service, AMC, people who volunteer rescuing people, etc. They were saying that lots of hikers were bringing GPS, cell phones, etc. but forgot to bring their common sense with them. They were hiking up these mountains without the proper gear, no food or water, no concept of the time it takes to get up and down the mountain, and an almost disregard for the effects of weather. It was funny in a way. They made it sound like the hikers packed their gadgets and figured that was all the needed.

Woman Trademarks Name and Threatens Sites Using It 273

An anonymous reader writes "Be careful mentioning Dr. Ann De Wees Allen. She's made it clear that she's trademarked her name and using it is 'illegal... without prior written permission.' She even lists out the names of offenders and shows you the cease-and-desist letter she sends them. And, especially don't copy any of the text on her website, because she's using a bit of javascript that will warn you 'Copyright Protect!' if you right click on a link."

Website Sells Pubic Lice 319

A British website called crabrevenge.com will help you prove that there is literally nothing you can't find online by selling you pubic lice. A disclaimer on the site says the creators "do not endorse giving people lice," and the lice are for "novelty purposes only." The company also boasts about a facility "where we do all of our parasite husbandry and carefully considered selective breeding." Three different packages are available: "Green package - One colony that can lay as many as 30 eggs for about $20. Blue package - Three colonies to share with your friends or freeze a batch or two for about $35. Red package - A vial of 'shampoo-resistant F-strain crabs' which can take up to two weeks to kill for about $52."

Not where I live and work, just outside of Boston. My co-workers and I repeatedly run Speed Test against each other. I have a Droid on Verizon, one has an iPhone on AT+T, one has a G1 on T-Mobile. Verizon is usually fastest by a wide margin, followed by T-Mobile and then AT&T. I'm a former AT+T customer and have been more than happy after switching to Verizon.

Google Go Capturing Developer Interest 434

angry tapir writes with news that Google Go seems to be cutting a wide swath through the programming community in just a short time since its early, experimental release. While Google insists that Go is still a work in progress (like so many of their offerings), many developers are so intrigued by the feature set that they are already implementing many noncritical applications with it. What experiences, good or bad, have you had with Google Go, and how likely is it to really take over?

Pirates as a Marketplace 214

John Riccitiello, the CEO of Electronic Arts, made some revealing comments in an interview with Kotaku about how the company's attitudes are shifting with regard to software piracy. Quoting: "Some of the people buying this DLC are not people who bought the game in a new shrink-wrapped box. That could be seen as a dark cloud, a mass of gamers who play a game without contributing a penny to EA. But around that cloud Riccitiello identified a silver lining: 'There's a sizable pirate market and a sizable second sale market and we want to try to generate revenue in that marketplace,' he said, pointing to DLC as a way to do it. The EA boss would prefer people bought their games, of course. 'I don't think anybody should pirate anything,' he said. 'I believe in the artistry of the people who build [the games industry.] I profoundly believe that. And when you steal from us, you steal from them. Having said that, there's a lot of people who do.' So encourage those pirates to pay for something, he figures. Riccitiello explained that EA's download services aren't perfect at distinguishing between used copies of games and pirated copies. As a result, he suggested, EA sells DLC to both communities of gamers. And that's how a pirate can turn into a paying customer."

Reports of IE Hijacking NXDOMAINs, Routing To Bing 230

Jaeden Stormes writes "We just started getting word of a new browser hijack from our sales force. 'Some site called Bing?' they said. Sure enough, since the patches last night, their IE6 and IE7 installations are now routing all NXDOMAINs to Bing. Try it out — put in something like www.DoNotHijackMe.com." We've had mixed results here confirming this: one report that up-to-date IE8 behaves as described. Others tried installing all offered updates to systems running IE6 and IE7 and got no hijacking.
Update: 08/11 23:24 GMT by KD : Readers are reporting that it's not Bing that comes up for a nonexistent domain, it's the user's default search engine (noting that at least one Microsoft update in the past changed the default to Bing). There may be nothing new here.

Oh man I had so much fun playing that game. I'd love to see another one. Hitting a granite car barrel and just ruining the other cars; hitting a pinball barrel in a tight alley and watching the car get blown all to hell. I booted up the original last year. I'll have to do it again soon. Anyway I second your motion.

I never heard of Stalker, but I'll definitely check it out. Thanks! I've played Deus Ex, Max Payne, and the HL series numerous times. For me, the Star Wars Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series is a slight step below all of the above, but those are games I come back to again and again. One other I'd add is Battlezone, which is a fps/rts combo.
