Comment Our laws (Score 1) 129

Or how about they follow our laws!

As others have pointed out the debate is pointless since we don't have any real AI and I'm not convinced we'll have anything as intelligent and sentient as a average human anytime soon.

Asimov assumed the laws could be hard coded, if we do create AI that probably won't be true.

We are living in a world with more than one video camera (cellphone) per person now, and there is a lot less 'ufo sighting' movies than ever.

Maybe this isn't true, there are half a million 'ufo sighting' videos on youtube, this one video is interesting:

I don't think we need to worry about aliens, we're probably going to destroy the planet ourselves.

Comment Fad over? (Score 1) 166

Are aliens still a big thing? I thought that fad had kind of fizzled. We have got to the point where no camera footage with UFO's in will be believed because footage is so easy to fake now.

Real dystopian world domination by corporations is being achieved one treaty at a time, but that doesn't make for a juicy story.

I may watch it on one condition - they change the theme tune, it's annoying.

. Solar is NOT cheaper and it may not even be "cleaner" than other options when you consider the whole lifecycle of the system.

Are you aware that the prices of solar panels and batteries are falling constantly and that is widely forecast to continue. modern solar panels do degrade slowly - good ones at about 0.5% per year, that means they'll still be pumping out plenty of energy in 50 years time.

Solar panels will very soon be the cheapest option without subsidy even against fossil fuels that are subsidised.

Nuclear is cheaper! Not any more.

Those are not robots, they do not meet the definition of a robot.

a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer.

'Complex' being the important bit... I think Google's definition is also a bit over-simplistic, one expects robots to do many actions with little or no direct human control.

The increments are tiny these days, you're lucky if you get 5% speed boost from the latest CPU or GPU.
