No, that's not true. If they piss you off, then their advertisers don't get views and also get pissed off. You're paying them - just in screen space, not dollars.

The design devotes a whole room to 3D printing, but I agree underground would be better than depleted uranium. Thick layer of martian ground is much easier to get than 2cm thick walls of DU.

Depleted Uranium is very heavy - where are the people going to get enough of it? Shipping it there would be extremely expensive

Back in the IE6 days this was more true - you had to create a site that worked in all the browsers, then create a site that worked in IE. Every release since then it's been getting better. Partially it's that the IE market share dropped so MS had to get their browser back up to working with sites, but they've done a lot of work to make it closer to standards and not include non-standard extensions. These days I can pretty much code one site and just review it in IE to make sure it works fine (though libraries like jquery have helped that on the javascript end).

I still wouldn't use IE, but at least I don't have to spend as much time in it testing.

That's true if you're the conspiratorial type - from a realistic/business point of view there are multiple customers. There are the customers that provide money: the people wanting to sell ads, and the customers that provide screen space: the ones that view the ads. If Google doesn't appease both, their business would fail. In some cases, it's in Google's best interest for people to have free/cheap access to web-capable devices. The easier it is for people to get on the web, the more people that will give Google screen space, and the more companies will give Google money to fill that space.
