The way you worded your dad's social security made me wonder if you are aware that current old folks are getting much more than they put in. I've read they hit parity after only 4 years. I looked for a reference and instead found this one saying they average triple what they paid in. http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/256212/medicare-and-social-security-what-you-pay-vs-what-you-will-get-maybe-veronique-de-rugy The comparison to people living like kings are a comparison not to present day rich, but to the rich back in the days before automation. Artificial Wombs In the Near Future? 367

New submitter DaemonDan writes "The first successful pregnancy by IVF was accomplished over 50 years ago, essentially creating a multi-billion dollar industry. Many scientists are trying to take it one step farther with a 100% test tube baby brought to term in an artificial womb. 'Cornell University's Dr. Hung-Ching Liu has engineered endometrial tissues by prompting cells to grow in an artificial uterus. When Liu introduced a mouse embryo into the lab-created uterine lining, "It successfully implanted and grew healthy," she said in this New Atlantis Magazine article. Scientists predict the research could produce an animal womb by 2020, and a human model by early 2030s.' The author of the article seems to believe that birth via artificial wombs could become the new norm, but is it really feasible, desirable or even affordable for the majority of Earth's population?"

Submission + - The hidden truths about calories (scientificamerican.com)

Raindance writes: "Scientific American recently explored how the traditional way of calculating calories has failed to keep up with science: "When the calorie was originally conceived it was in the context of human work ... chemical fire with which to get the job done, coal in the human stove. Fat, it has been estimated, has nine calories per gram, whereas carbohydrates and proteins have just four; fiber is sometimes counted separately and gets awarded a piddling two. Every box of every food you have ever bought is labeled based on these estimates; too bad then that they are so often wrong."

The NYT has some suggestions to improve and broaden our current labeling system, while others seem to feel the task of defining a healthy diet should be taken away from nutritionists and given to gut flora microbiologists. What's Slashdot's dream label?"
