I've never read a full novel, ever, either fiction or non-fiction. I've tried a few times but never made it past the first chapter without being bored out of my skull.
Student need to be exposed to all sorts of topics so they can find out what they like and are good at. His kid might be good at public speaking but might have a passion for chemistry. Chemistry is also a good life skill, how else would you be able to read the ingredients on the cereal box?

Why not just change the law so a store can't sell incandescent bulbs cheaper than CFL or LED? You wouldn't need to ban them to have the save effect.

Although you might not use a lot of advanced math learning it changes how you solve problems. I found it abstract algebra and formal logic the most useful.
You're making the assumption that the ONLY reason for developing drugs is profit. There's no evidence that research funded by public money is less effective than research funded by corporate coffers.
Maybe I'm a bit too cynical but I think they haven't found anything but realize that billions of dollars of funding is on the line. How many people in the world would be qualified to argue the claim and not be part of their team?
