First we had submitters who didn't read the stories they were posting. Then we had editors who didn't read the stories they were approving. Now we have companies who don't read the articles they put out. Seriously, it's called a file cache. That's how it's supposed to work. Nice job, idiots.

Submission + - EC mulling legal action over Phorm in the UK (bbc.co.uk)

megla writes: Regular readers may remember the attempts to introduce Phorm in the UK by various ISPs. Phorm provides targeted adverts by trawling a user's browsing history using equipment installed at the ISP level and has been tested out by several of them, including one trial by BT which did not notify users that their browsing was effectively being intercepted.

Now, despite the British government's protestations that this was all above board, the EC is looking into taking legal action against the UK for the way it handled the trial. It seems that not everyone was convinced by the government's attempts to legitimise such an abuse of privacy.

Submission + - Yahoo bringing adverts to PDF files

megla writes: The BBC reports that Adobe and Yahoo have reached a deal to place dynamic adverts in PDFs. From the article:

The service will allow publishers to make money by including adverts linked to the content of a PDF document in a panel at the side of the page.
As if the standard PDF reader wasn't bloated enough already, now it's going to be reading your documents, sending information about them to Yahoo, and displaying adverts.
Perhaps now is the time to block PDF reader in your firewall...

Submission + - last.fm bought by CBS for $280m

megla writes: The BBC is reporting that last.fm has been purchased by CBS for the princely sum of $280m — not quite up to Gootube levels, but fairly significant.
While the article quotes founding member Martin Stiksel as saying it's "an exciting opportunity", I can't help but feel that not all the 15 million users will agree with the effects of commercialization.
As yet their seems to be no announcement on the last.fm website.
