I agree with you to an extent, but I think you are misunderstanding what unschooling is. It is a rejection of the structure and content of the public schools, but its not a rejection of all authority. We are quite strict about the amount of time Elijah spends on math vs, on video games, for example. A large percentage of human knowledge is quite painful to learn. There seems to be no way around forcing the multiplication tables; however, there are plenty of subjects that require no forcing whatsoever, and benefit greatly from removing the authority figure. Take literature for example, there is no worse pain than reading a book you hate, as there is no greater pleasure in reading a book you love.

Unschooler seven years, of Elijah, age seven. I've heard this particular argument a lot, funny thing is, I don't remember school being all that much of a social experience. In fact, I recall not being allowed to speak to other students at all for most of the day. . . Anyhow, (better) social experiences can be had elsewhere. We use the Boys and Girls club personally, but I can imagine that the YMCA, the local corner karate class, or the skate park down the street would be equally effective in instructing our youth in the swearing and witty comebacks required for a healthy social existance.

You've stuck on the single biggest advantage to homeschooling in general there. One-Six (grandparents) teachers per kid, as apposed to 30 kids per teacher. This means if we have problems in fractions, we work on fractions. Our teaching strategy is tailored to just one person. Elijah is not held up by others deficiencies, nor is he responsible for holding others up. This has tremendous repercussions for self-confidence, not to mention his rate of progression.

Head First Rails Screenshot-sm 57

Anita Kuno writes "I suggested Head First Rails to a friend before I even finished it. He was asking me questions that I didn't have time to answer, and I knew the book could explain better than I. My friend is impatient, and I was uncertain what his experience would be. At first he was frustrated, but I assured him the answers were in the book. The incremental style of Head First Rails includes some exercises that are designed to fail to reinforce the learning process. I was confident that his answer would be found in the pages and he trusted me enough to go back and continue the exercises. He later told me he is very happy with the book and grateful that I suggested it." Read on for the rest of Anita's review.

2009 ACM Programming Contest Results and Webcast 49

Jon Larsson writes "Yesterday, the 33rd World Finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest were held at KTH — The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. World Champions, for the second consecutive year, are the Saint Petersburg State University of IT, Mechanics and Optics. They won in competition with 99 other teams from all six continents — the best of the over 7000 teams participating in the qualifying rounds during the past half year. The full results can be found here and the contest problem set is available here (PDF). For the first time ever, the whole event was broadcast live, both on the web and on national TV in Sweden. The broadcast was produced by media students of KTH and the Lillehammer University College in Norway. The webcast in its entirety (over 7 hours) can be viewed here."

Analyzing YouTube's Audio Fingerprinter 116

Al Benedetto writes "I stumbled across this article which analyzes the YouTube audio content identification system in-depth. Apparently, since YouTube's system has no transparency, the behaviors had to be determined based on dozens of trial-and-error video uploads. The author tries things like speed/pitch adjustment, the addition of background noise, as well as other audio tweaks to determine exactly what you'd need to adjust before the fingerprinter started mis-identifying material. From the article: 'When I muted the beginning of the song up until 0:30 (leaving the rest to play) the fingerprinter missed it. When I kept the beginning up until 0:30 and muted everything from 0:30 to the end, the fingerprinter caught it. That indicates that the content database only knows about something in the first 30 seconds of the song. As long as you cut that part off, you can theoretically use the remainder of the song without being detected. I don't know if all samples in the content database suffer from similar weaknesses, but it's something that merits further research.'"

Surprised that with all the outrage on here, exactly none is directly where it ought to be, at the school system itself. If you send your children to a prison society, this is what will happen to them. No surprise there. Not for this reason specifically, but for many many many others, my son has never seen the inside of a school building, and won't until college.

Save yourself the pain and suffering of input lag, dropped connections, battery swapping, and start up time (as the wireless device pops out of standby), and just get yourself a good ole usb extension cable and repeater. This goes double or triple if you intend to play any games at all on the TV. For just clicking on an mkv file, a wireless device will do you. But it will do you poorly.
