Submission + - Starting to manage a development team

Kris writes: I'm a programmer and have been for the past 9 years — and for 3 of these years I've started a small media agency with two colleagues — a business advisor and a graphics designer, however in the past 12 months the business has expanded rapidly where now, as well as some outsourcing we've now got 2 more developers directly under me. Unfortunately I've never had any management experience — and I'm not really sure where to start.

Time planning etc. is fine as I've aways done this with my own workflow — however some of the softer skills and general people management I have a real problem with. Has anyone here been in a similar position where they've 'fallen into' a management position? And have some advice?

Submission + - Myspace.cn has a slight Twist

php_krisp writes: "Earlier on today Slashdot reported that Myspace.cn had gone live with people being asked to report on other breaking the rules. We've run an article on our blog about our experience on myspace china and were surprised to find that it censors on the fly words like 'Dalai Lama' and 'Tiananmen Square'. We immediately substituted those a's with á's to bypass the censor, but how long will it be allowed to stay up? Will it be deleted by tomorrow?"

Support for U.S. Mandatory Data Retention Laws 264

chill wrote to mention a C|Net article about an upswell in support for a mandatory data retention policy here in the U.S. From the article: "Top Bush administration officials have endorsed the concept, and some members of the U.S. Congress have said federal legislation is needed to aid law enforcement investigations into child pornography. A bill is already pending in the Colorado State Senate. Mandatory data retention requirements worry privacy advocates because they permit police to obtain records of e-mail chatter, Web browsing or chat-room activity that normally would have been discarded after a few months."
