Submission + - Worlds Largest Wave Farm

An anonymous reader writes: The BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/6377423.stm is reporting that the Scottish Executive has announced funding for a project to create what will be the worlds largest wave farm.
The location off Orkney has been used to test the Pelamis device in the past and is now to be the location for commercial testing. It is estimated that waters off Scotland could provide 25% of the wave power available to Europe

Submission + - Standards Bodies being lobied regarding OpenXML

EreIamJH writes: The Standards Blog reports on a complaint from the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) included in its response to the MS-OpenXML draft. SABS complains that it is sick and tired of being pressured by special interest groups trying to get approval / stop approval for proposed phony standards:

The fact that some consortium has published a document that they refer to as a standard does not automatically imply that it has any sort of widespread industry acceptance. The fact that the publisher might claim international usage or acceptance is not longer a valid reason in these days of large multinationals, and the SABS has previously been approached by local branches of multinationals to vote in support of such PAS submissions, even if we have no local industry involvement or membership in the appropriate JTC
As a result SABS has dug its heels in, and will be automatically voting against all such future submissions.

Submission + - PS3 Firmware Version Check Circumvented

Chouonsoku writes: "Before yesterday, PlayStation 3 owners had to be running the latest system firmware in order to access the PlayStation Network. The PlayStation Network allows users to play their games online, download demos, trailers and add-ons for their games. However, with a simple DNS request redirection, the firmware check becomes null and void, allowing users to access the PlayStation Network from any firmware, up-to-date or not."

Submission + - Livestock's Contribution to Global Warming

Aqua_boy17 writes: The Christian Science Monitor is reporting that people who eat meat are responsible for about 1.5 tons more of carbon dioxide being put in to the atmosphere each year than their vegan counterparts. The article cites a recently released report from the UN's Food and Agriculture Orginization stating that livestock raised for human consumption is now responsible for as much as 18% of total greenhouse gases emitted annually. While livestock animals are responsible for about 9% of total Carbon Dioxide release, they're also blamed for nearly 40% of the total methane and 65% of the total amount of Nitrous Oxide released into the environment. When added together the amount of total greenhouse gas emissions produced as a byproduct of raising livestock is already greater than all current modes of transportation combined, and is expected to rise in the future.

Submission + - ASUS Motherboard Defect

typezero303 writes: Something happened to me over the past couple of months that I felt should be shared with

everyone.

I've been in the computer industry for quite some time, and I know my way around hardware...

and I know when something isn't working the way it should be.

About a year ago a bought and built a Opteron 2XX machine. Having had good performance from

ASUS boards in the past, I decided that I would use their Opteron motherboard. It had

everything that I needed, and was a good price.

So I built a dual 244 Opteron System, with 2 Gigs of Ram, Radeon X850 video, and a bunch of

harddrives.

I work in audio production, so I didn't need anything to high end in video, but I did need

the memory access, and the processing power.

Regardless... around November of 2006 I downloaded an updated version of CPU-Z (V1.36)...

This was the first version of CPU-Z that suported HyperTransport(HT) link speed. So having

done the test I saw the the HTLink on CPU0 was running a 1Ghz, which is fine... but the HT

on CPU1 was running at 200Mhz. This caused some alarm. So I did a bunch of checking, but

couldn't find any imformation about this sort of problem on my motherboard.

Then X-mas hit, and I had other priorities to deal with. Once everything calmed down, I got

back into it... ran a bunch of test, including SisoSoft Sandra Pro Business on my server,

and it didn't give me any indication that anything was wrong... c'ept that my CPUs could

only get up to 50% usage, and that HT on CPU1 was only 200Mhz.

I contacted AMD, and within a day they gave me a bunch of test to run to see if it was the

CPUs, or the motherboard. The most obvious was by swapping the CPUs from their sockets. I

did that, but the problem saied with CPU1, which led AMD and myself to beleive it was an

ASUS problem.

So I contacted ASUS. Told them what the problem was, and sent in my motherboard. Several

weeks later, after a lot of hassle, and calling, e-mail, and freaking out a little over the

phone the *sarcasm*wonderfull and helpfull*/sarcasm* ASUS customer suport to me that they

would send me a new motherboard, as they could not fix my current board.

I got my motherboard back last week, put everything back together, and wouldn't you know

it... the problem is still there.

So i called ASUS tech again, talked to their Server technitian.

He asked: "Are you running the latest BIOS"
Me: "Yes, first thing I did."
Him: "How did you first realise that HT was running slow"
Me: "I first tested it in Nov using CPU-Z"
Him: "Thats a 3rd party tool. we can't take that as legit information"
Me: "I then backed it up with Sandra test, which comfirmed the problem. So I sent my

moherboard to you guys, you sent me a new one because the old one could not be fixed."
Him: "And did it fix the problem?"
Me: "No, otherwise I wouldn't calling you right now."
Him: "I see."
Me: "I've even contacted AMD again, and used their own tools for checking HT speeds"
Him: "And what did it say?"
Me: "It said that CPU1 HT Link was 'Physicly Not Conntected' and that speed was set to

200Mhz rather then 1000Mhz where it should be."
Him: "Thats an AMD tool, it's not a legit tool to use."
Me: "Your telling me that the company who designed, built, my CPUs, and was one of the key

creators in HT technology doesn't qualify as a 'legit' enough to make a tool to test their

own design? You've got to joking. You know what, I guess I'll have to buy a Tyan

motherboard to make sure that everything is working properly. Thank you, you solved my

problem."

There is a seirous problem with the K8N-DL motherboard where the CPU0 is fine, but CPU1

isn't conntected properly. In two motherboards I found this problem. I took a screen shot of this problem.

If anyone else has, or might be looking into buying this motherboard, I would look into

this.

If anyone has some ideas as to what is going on, I'd really would like to hear about it.

Submission + - Temp. difference observed between Sun's poles

ATestR writes: From the Article (science.nasa.gov), one pole of the sun is cooler than the other. That's the surprising conclusion announced today by scientists who have been analyzing data from the ESA-NASA Ulysses spacecraft.

Measurements of the Northern Solar pole taken by Ulysses in 1994 and 1995 observed a temperature difference of 7 — 8 percent from the recent measurements taken of the Southern pole. Since the average Solar temperature has been measured to be constant during this twelve year period, the scientists invovled with the project are scratching their heads over the difference.

Submission + - Saudi Free Speech Campaign Goes Online

cultrhetor writes: "Following the arrest of ten Saudi activists involved in circulating a petition in favor of protecting freedom of expression, fellow reform advocates have posted the petition online, according to a BBC news article posted today. According to the article, By placing their petition on the internet, the Saudi activists are taking an enormous risk. From the article:

The petition calls for elections in which both men and women would be allowed to vote.
The signatories want freedom of expression to be protected by law and they want the powers of the interior ministry curtailed.
But the Saudi authorities have made it clear they will not tolerate public calls for political change.
What do you think? Can the Internet be use effectively to change policy in truly authoritarian governments?"
