Except that they have a lower level API and as they are a single hardware target games can be heavily optimized, Steam Boxes do not have these advantages thus need more powerful hardware for the same result. Nor do they have a manufacturer willing to have little profit or a loss on the hardware in order to get them in the hands of consumers.

For some reason people expected both games optimized for Steam Boxes as well as cheap hardware, neither of which were ever going to be a reality.

Unfortunately there has been a trend lately on Slashdot where the editors accept a lot of stories from people linking to their own site. I guess this is acceptable in the Twitter world but doesn't match a meritocracy where users submit interesting stories instead of pumping up their page views.

The Shield also costs about as much as an XboxOne and game streaming only (AFAIK) works with systems using nvidia GPUs. If you don't intend to play Android games on the shield its a pretty clear choice to go for the Steam Link (pending reviews of course).

A steam box is about gaming, why would anyone buy one to drive 4k video? Gaming at 4k is not trivial even for today's high-end GPUs, go try it with your i3 and $100 video card.

A PC that drives 4k is going to be hot and probably louder than most people would like in their living room.

is only what, $50 compared to $350 for an Xbox One? If you're looking for PC -> TV streaming that will be far more economical than buying an Xbox.

Steam Boxes have always had questionable value, they aren't going to be as efficient as consoles and do you really want that gaming PC in your living room?

An identity thief does everything they can to ensure the original person isn't aware that someone is using their identity, not use an address that goes directly to the original person.

Anecdotally I have chrome tabs crash, I do not see firefox crash. What do you mean stick to it? If the OS needs the memory it will be relegated to swap, at which point if you resume using the tab you need to wait for the OS to retrieve it from disk hardly 'smooth'.

And what bugs would those be? Anecdotally I don't see Firefox crash despite using it more whilst I do encounter Chrome tabs crashes (not daily, perhaps a few times a week).

One process per tab would mean FF would use the excessive amount of memory that Chrome uses.

Better add-ons could be a faster adblock, a better no-script, etc.

Why would you switch to Chrome? It just has a different version of all this stuff baked in.

Unlike a lot of whiners here I use Firefox as my primary browser, it uses less memory than Chrome and is as fast. That said, the first thing I do after updating Firefox is figure out how to get disable or remove the extraneous parts they keep adding.

Installing on a new box now consists of about 10-15 minutes of trying to remember and searching for the about:config options to ditch them. Further, I also have no plans to create a Firefox account in order to continue to use sync..

Don't try to copy what Google is doing with Chrome, you're alienating the core userbase who are capable of adding these features if we want on our own. If this sort of stuff continues I imagine we'll see a credible fork.
