EA Looking Into Reviving Classic Games? 142

Gamasutra reports that Electronic Arts has filed for trademarks on several popular old franchises: Populous, Wing Commander, Theme Park, and Road Rash. This, along with comments from Harvey Elliot of EA's Bright Light Studio, have led many to suspect that we may see new titles for those IPs in the near future. Elliot said, "If you remember all the old classics you played, if you go back and play them now, they're not the same. They were right for their time, and the trick with those games is coming up with what's right for the time now. I'm going to look at them at some point; I think there's an opportunity to bring those back in the future, but only if it's right for the time and not just a 'remake' or something. We'd need to do it in a way that's true to the original values, but would still make a great game today."

New Languages Vs. Old For Parallel Programming 321

joabj writes "Getting the most from multicore processors is becoming an increasingly difficult task for programmers. DARPA has commissioned a number of new programming languages, notably X10 and Chapel, written especially for developing programs that can be run across multiple processors, though others see them as too much of a departure to ever gain widespread usage among coders."

Microsoft To Open Retail Stores 535

chaz373 writes "CNET reports that Microsoft is going retail. In the 'Beyond Binary' blog Ina Fried reports, 'After years of brushing off the notion, Microsoft said on Thursday that it will open up its own line of retail stores. Without detailing the plans, Microsoft said it has hired David Porter, a 25-year Wal-Mart veteran, to lead the effort. Sources say that Porter's mission will be to develop the company's retail plans and that the effort is likely to start small with just a few locations.'"

Comment Re:I have a vague memory of St. Helens (Score 1) 293

I was on the last airplane out of Anchorage International Airport after the eruption of Mt. Redoubt in 1989. Just as we were about to board the volcano erupted, they said we had about 30 minutes to get on the plane and takeoff before the airport was closed. We just barely made it. An unfortunate KLM 747 flew right thru the ash cloud, lost all four engines and was not able to get them back til about 5k feet. We saw it when we got back, it looked like they had sandblasted it.

I also fondly remember watching the ash cloud head our way from the Mt Spur, and the shovelling the ash the next day off the driveway with snow shovels.
