Submission + - Hulu pulls content off Boxee (cnet.com)

CannonballHead writes: Hulu is requesting that Boxee stop making Hulu's videos available, according to a statement posted to Boxee's blog. Hulu stated that the problem is with their own content providers. "Our content providers requested that we turn off access to our content via the Boxee product," Hulu wrote. "We are respecting their wishes."

Avner Ronen, CEO of Boxee, has stated that he is disappointed and that he hopes "that they will realize the opportunity is greater than the threat."

Technology (Apple)

Submission + - Apple's 358 Page iPhone Patent (tgdaily.com)

CannonballHead writes: Apple is filing a patent, apparently because they are scared of Palm's upcoming smartphone, Pre. "The announcement of Palm's new smartphone (dubbed Pre) has clearly sent shivers down Apple's spine [...] Armed with the 358 page iPhone patent awarded last week, Timothy Cook who runs Apple in Jobs' absence has now threatened Palm with legal action."

Submission + - Potential XP to Windows 7 Upgrade Deal (itworld.com)

CannonballHead writes:

Details are sketchy as of this point, but strategically, it is designed to mitigate the number of users who are putting off buying a new computer, because they would rather go directly to Windows 7 from XP, rather than deal with Vista.

The brief article also mentions that although it is only a rumor, "TechArp does claim to have seen a copy of a letter Microsoft sent out to its OEM partners."

Submission + - Linux user's guide to HP-UX/AIX/Solaris

CannonballHead writes: I use RedHat and SuSE Linux at work, as well as HP-UX, AIX, and Solaris. I'm fine with Linux, which I've used fairly extensively, but AIX/HP-UX/Solaris can still be a challenge. Is there any resource out there that compares the four systems and is geared towards a Linux user? A simple example would be where filesystem information is kept; it would be nice to be able to look up /etc/fstab in a resource and find the HP-UX, AIX, and Solaris equivalents.

Submission + - Matter Colliding at the Speed of Light

CannonballHead writes:
Researchers have spent eight years constructing the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island in New York state. Its goal is to smash the nuclei of atoms together and study their wreckage to determine the fundamental properties of matter.
Apparently, there are fears about the smashing of two gold atoms together, fears about it creating strange particles that will engulf the entire earth, or creating a black hole that will suck the entire earth into itself in a few minutes. I knew money was powerful, but I didn't know gold was that influential.
