Submission + - What really happened on board Flight AF447 (popularmechanics.com)

iB1 writes: On the 1st June 2009, Air France flight AF447 crashed into the sea with the loss of all 228 people on board.

Roughly two years later, the flight controllers were finally found, and the information used to piece together what happened on that fateful morning.

This is a report by Jeff Wise of the mistakes that the pilots made with transcripts taken from the flight records. It's surprisingly harrowing to read.

If the systems are really that close to collapsing, then you know as well as I do that it'll happen at the worst possible moment, and you will get all of the blame for it.

Talk to your boss ASAP and highlight where the issues are and explain to him in monetary terms what will happen if the system screws up / how much time will be lost.

Push to see if you can afford to get someone else hired - even if it's a junior network engineer. You need to share the pain before it consumes you.

I remember we had three of these on trollies in my primary school - two had colour monitors, and one had a black and white monitor. Somehow I managed to network/schmooze/brown nose my way into becoming a "computer mover" when I was in the 5th year with two of my friends. We were tasked with moving the computers first thing on a Monday morning into a new classroom, who would then have it for a week. We'd plug it in, turn it on and load up the correct disk that the teacher wanted to use. I think that's where my love of computers came from right there. They were really good computers for their time. I gather that they were expensive, which is why they didn't find their way into many homes. However, a generation of British children did indeed grow up using them.

Submission + - LoveFilm to ditch Flash for Silverlight (theregister.co.uk)

iB1 writes: The Register reports that LoveFilm has decided to ditch flash streaming for its films and switch to Microsoft Silverlight by the first week of January 2012, thus denying customers with non-Intel macs and Linux users access.

Submission + - Carphone Warehouse to close it's Best Buy shops in (bbc.co.uk)

iB1 writes: They've only been open since April last year — but Carphone Warehouse have decided to shut its 11 Best Buy stores after failing to make a profit.

Is this another example of HP, where a company only gives itself a very short timeframe to make a profit before pulling the plug?

Comment What a useless website (Score 3, Interesting) 102

So I just went to the zavilla webiste: The main page says "The development of Zavilia: Identify UK Rioters has been temporarily paused due to a substantial decrease in traffic and in user interactions. However, we fully intend to continue development at some point in the near future." In other words, either someone has got to them or there wasn't much of an interest anyway. Also, the old website has what? About 20 photos, most of which seem to have been taken from either Getty or Reuters. I can't exactly see this going anywhere.
