Outer space is a hostile environment for humans, characterized by an airless vacuum, thermal extremes, ionizing radiation and speeding micro meteoroids.

Don't go there then.

But does it run Linux?

No, seriously... last time I tried to install Ubuntu with an ATI card (a few months ago), I couldn't get dual monitors to work correctly.

The restricted drivers exist, but are unstable, awkward and painful. Linux and Nvidia - a bit better in my experience..

Submission + - Microscopic plastic debris damaging marine life (bbc.co.uk)

goldaryn writes: Microscopic plastic debris from washing clothes is accumulating in the marine environment and could be entering the food chain, the BBC reports.

In order to identify how widespread the presence of microplastic was on shorelines, the team took samples from 18 beaches around the globe, including the UK, India and Singapore.

"We found that there was no sample from around the world that did not contain pieces of microplastic."

Submission + - Thailand welcomes Twitter's censorship plans, roya (thenextweb.com)

patiwat writes: "The Thai government has called Twitter's tweet censorship move a "welcome development." Tweets may now be blocked at the request of the Thai government; the system will be used to discourage and punish lese majeste (criticism of the Thai King). The government previously declared that Facebook users worldwide "liking" a lese majeste Facebook link would also be prosecuted; over 10,000 Facebook pages have been removed and hundreds of individuals, including children and academics, have been jailed. Calls to reform the lese majeste laws have been fiercely criticized by no less than the Army Commander, whose backing is critical to the government's stability."

Submission + - It's Time To Fork Ubuntu (muktware.com) 1

sfcrazy writes: Looking at the backlash Ubuntu is getting for announcing HUD, it will boost the migration to Linux Mint. Users who were thinking that Canonical won't mess with Ubuntu anymore and will only focus on Unity mess are disasppointed. 12.04 was their last hope and its gone. I think Ubuntu can still save itself and satisfy both long-time loyal customers and enthusiasts. They need to fork Ubuntu. I propose that Canonical make a version X — UbuntuX (like Debian's Sid) where they can introduce all their experiments and UI changes. The main Ubuntu can stay in sync with Gnome 3 development and offer users the standard GNU/Linux interface so that they don't feel challenges.

This way while Ubuntu will retain (and bring back) old/loyal users and also attract new users who want ease of use and a familiar interface, it will also satisfy the enthusiasts.
