Comment Volume and Loudness are different things (Score 2, Informative) 636

I've seen this here in Oz, smarmy TV spokesdrones telling us that the volume is no higher during the ads, this is true, as they are discussing the peak value in decibels.

What they don't mention is the loudness (the amount of sound) has been cranked right up, which is why they are too "loud"

When we want to discuss loudness, they always come back with irrelevant facts about volume.

Yes what was Australasia is now Oceania.
But neither of those two words describe the Australian continent, which is called Australia.
The word Oceania describes a region of the Southern Pacific ocean

It's so simple.

Also When you say "our continent" what do you mean ?
The people who would call Australia "our continent" would be usually be Australians.

Project Management For Beginners? 168

lawpoop writes "At my current workplace, I'm tasked with creating a rather complicated and metastasizing web-database application. I've mostly been the sole 'IT guy' at my workplaces in the past, so I've never had to, nor taken the time, to learn proper project management routines — code comments mostly got me through it. Now for this project, it's getting somewhat hairy and I'm sensing that I need to start doing things in a more organized manner. What resources would you direct me to? Books? (I wouldn't mind buying one good one.) Websites? What do proper 'specs' look like? Must I use UML (seems complicated and unintuitive) or a simpler ER diagram? For this job, I just need to provide better estimates for completing features, but what will I need if/when I would be working with a team?"

Remember the yeast is making carbon dioxide from the vegetable matter it is eating, which was removed from the atmosphere months or years ago. Nothing to do with anthropogenic climate change that is all about releasing gases that have been locked out of the atmosphere for thousands or millions of years.

i.e. Spent my 20's....experimenting.
I'm not sure it was pissed away, as I did learn a lot that isn't really taught anywhere, and keeping your head, while all about you are losing theirs, is a excellent ability that I feel my life experiences has given me. Early 30's decided I needed more direction, and of course I wanted to earn more than unskilled pay.
Cisco certs were the answer for me, easier than a degree, but still requires a certain level of self discipline.

They gave me the leverage to enter the internetworking field, in my 30's, and now with a decade of experience, I still look fairly secure even in these tough times.
I don't even want to think about where I may be if I hadn't got those pieces of paper.
It's almost impossible that you will be facepalming "If only I didn't have that pesky degree", and almost certain that it will be an advantage.

I try to get to Wikileaks from my Australian (state) government computer, and I'm getting a error 504.

Exactly the type of stupidity that believes this filtering will serve any useful purpose, also believes that blocking wikileaks serves some useful purpose. They can't even begin to understand.

We haven't even started "protecting the children" yet, and already we have a list of thousands of unpleasant sites, in the wild, and available to any determined individual of whatever age.

I so hate seeing my money spent on such clueless "policy", the insane idea that things will be the way they wish, if they just make enough rules.
