Comment They will eventually go dead (Score 1) 90

A Bluecoat box, without updates, eventually ceases to operate properly if at all. So, Bluecoat can just chase down the offending machines and therefore the money stream, and stop updating them. Eventually they won't be able to run a report (to figure out who went where), block proxy avoidance sites, or do anything useful with it. How do I know this? I have a large customer that stopped paying the maintenance, and that is what happened.

I agree. This isn't about doing anything for anyone but for themselves. Collectively, this is congress extorting money from the the telco's. Ideologically, the demos will line up on Verizon and Sprint side (and to a lessor degree consumer groups), the repubs on AT+T's side, and all of them will take huge contributions from both. After all, if they don't make some sort of stink, they won't get any money.

They are at a bandwidth limitation though. The number of streams you get is determined by how fast your local loop is. If you get more than 30 megabit, you get 2 streams, if you get over 60 megabit (I think) you get 3. You would have to be right on top of the DSLAM to get 4 streams. I have about 2000 feet of local loop and get about 38 megs, so my copper isn't too good.

They mix the internet service in with that available amount too so it just takes that right out of the total. If you sign up for super max internet speeds, it will kill the amount of streams you can get (when you are using it).

I've used it for months (years?). A killer pro tip was to put it on bluetooth dial in your car. Then you could just say "call Google" and then it was all voice commands to connect to anyone. Truly awesome...

The first one, at the IU school of medicine, I'm very familiar with that place...they have no data center to speak of, and I do not know that person. I never heard of that incident. Also, who doesn't run spanning tree with BPDU gaurd and other such protections. I know IU does, for a fact.

Something is very very wrong with that article.

People simply do not understand things at the top of the political/business world. None of this was about what he did, falsified what, or expensed whatever. This was about someone else wanting him out. Someone powerful wants the job, or doesn't like the guy, period.

People at this level are in constant competition with others to keep their jobs, and have to force others out. If you make yourself politically weak by doing some jackoff thing like this, it makes it easier to take you out. Here, someone did. They managed to overlook the data center for his kids school, for chrissake. He just had more juice at that time.

Agree completely. On some issues I am quite liberal...this idea is not only dumb technically (we have certs/crypto already, and that is good enough; witness massive expansion of e-commerce), but it is also political suicide.

This is so bad I wonder if the Obama administration is even proposing it, and not a right wing smear job.

Dumb dumb dumb.
